Well laid out over a few acres with very interactive exhibits telling some harrowing stories of life as a miner. Internal part of the museum was amazing and a good coffee shop to boot. A total must if you are in this area

We would thoroughly recommend a visit. The story of this and other local pits, and the people who lived and worked here, is told in a very interesting and engaging way. The annual pass for the cost of a single visit is an excellent bonus.

The mining museum is very interesting & quite emotional in parts for me! Especially reading some of the stories of the families lives & the conditions they worked in.All in all it was very well presented & well worth a visit,to see how brave those Men& Children were. Also not forgetting the Ponies.

Great day out at the Woodhorn museum. Very interesting. A lovely cafe to finish the day off. Staff are very happy and helpful even to the point that I had a sandwich made for me as there was no brown bread ones left.
I would certainly recommend a visit

I've never been to Woodhorn Museum before, but after seeing a report from the museum on a local news progamme, I decided to pay it a visit.
Woodhorn Colliery was a working pit until 41 years ago, with many of the buildings restored, and a visitors centre added called the Cutter. While it's not possible to go underground, you can stand in the pit shaft and see the machinery where men and pit ponies were lowered 880 feet into the ground. Also the stables have been lovingly restored with an exhibiition about the pit ponies, which were used at the pit until it closed in 1981. There are plans to build a miniature railway on the edge of the museum, which should attract more visitors.
However, the main attraction is the Cutter visitors centre, where there are interactive displays about the life of a miner from the early 20th century, a mock up of a coal seam, displays of colliery banners and features on the Miners Strike in 1984 and the colliery band. Football fans will love the display of memorabilia of Ashington's world famous Charlton Brothers, and art loves should check out the gallery containing paintings by the Pitman Painters, miners who were taught to paint in their spare time in the 1930s. Another thing I liked was the mock up of the miners cottage from 100 years ago, where the attention to detail was brilliant.
For £ 7, Woodhorn Museum won't break the bank and is an excellent tourist attraction for people who are interested in the coal industry. The museum is easy to reach by car from the A197 and is signposted from Morpeth onwards.

An absolutely fascinating museum on the mining industry and the lives of those who worked at the Ashington Colliery. I cannot recommend it highly enough; we all came away feeling we had learnt a lot about an industry about which we had very limited knowledge. Really well presented and explained. The Pitman Painters' exhibition was also fascinating and we had a very interesting guide take us through some of the paintings which added enormously to our enjoyment and understanding.

A really good museum giving insight into the history and experience of the mining industry and was good at being factual rather than sentimental or political. the visitor centre is a beautiful building but my one disappointment was that the Ashington painters gallery is really badly lit with lots of reflection off the surface of the pictures making them hard to see. I could see most of them better on the information tablet you can use than on the wall which rather removes the point of going to see the originals. this really should be addressed.

Enjoyed the overall experience of the gallery of pitmen painters and also the exhibition of black and white photographs showing social history in the Cutter building. There is an exhibition showing how miners lived and what it was like cutting coal in the very narrow seams underground.
There are also some buildings to look in such as the pithead under the winding gear which lowered the cages to the bottom. Mining was dangerous work as explained about the disaster when over 200 men and boys lost their lives.
We also tried the cafe which served excellent coffee and scones. Would recommend Woodhorn for a visit. Plenty of space for children to play.

Decided to visit the museum after reading the good reviews and I am definitely glad we did.
A lovely museum with lots of information but done in an understandable way which makes it more enjoyable.
Dogs are allowed in the grounds which was great for us.
The cafe is lovely and the outside area was really tidy which isn't always the case and food choice good and reasonable.
It's set in lovely grounds and even has a children's outside play area.
Please support them if you're in the area.

Hi, after looking carefully at the website the museum appears to be free yet a recent review talks about an admission fee. Could somebody please clarify! If in fact there is a fee this needs to be clearly updated on the website. Many thanks.

What is there for children aged 5 and 6 to enjoy, other than a play park?

Thanks for asking. We're always trying to keep our younger visitors happy so we have special activities on at weekends and during the school holidays. During the summer, the youngsters can enjoy some hands-on craft activities directly relating to our mining heritage and the Pitmen Painters summer exhibitions. Until Sunday they will be making miners' lamps and tallies and then helping to create a flock of colourful collage pigeons. Other activities follow too. in addition to that we've a family trail you can pick up from the welcome desk which is an interesting and entertaining way to explore the site together. There are lots of buttons to press and interactives as your explore too. We've also got objects they can handle, colouring sheets that can enjoy.
Hope this helps.

Can you get to woodhorn on the bus?
Deborah B
英国Amble3 条分享
HI Rachel. Unfortunately the bus doesn't come right into the Woodhorn site, but it is within walking distance of Ashington Bus Station (20 mins). If you decide to walk, here are the directions: turn right out of the bus station, and right again at the roundabout along the A197. Go straight over the mini roundabout, and after about 600 metres go through the white gates on the left hand side. You'll cross a freight railway line (no longer in use but please take care). Bear right and follow the path through the QEII Country Park to the Woodhorn car park. Look out for red squirrels!
More information is available on our website and there's a link to a travel site too.
Hope this helps.
Hello. My 4 x Gt Grandfather was born in Woodhorn in 1805 and became a mining engineer. He was asked by George Stephenson to come to Coalville and share his modern mining techniques at George's new mine at Snibston. He became George's chief mining engineer. He must have been a travelling engineer as his children were born in different villages in Northumberland. Will I get a flavour of mining life in the 1800s or is it a more modern experience?

Hello. Thanks for the message and your interesting family story. Woodhorn buildings data from about 1896 and the displays we have are generally about the 20th century so I don't think we will cover the period you require. Sorry.
The national mining museum in Wakefield might be able to help.
Always happy to see you if you are passing by though.
