We went for an evening walk and were blown away by these extensive and well-maintained ramparts, with views out to sea or over the Tweed and the town. Great for a walk with plenty of benches if you want to stop for a chat. Could do with a few more information boards, but was definitely a good surprise.

Berwick is not what we expected. Very run down main street with shop fronts all uncared for, filthy and unpainted with weeds growing outside most shops and out of most gutters,etc.
Not to mention the seagull crap which covers most of the town centre making it most unpleasant. I know gulls are a natural part of a working fishing port but something needs to be done and soon and until something is we certainly won't be back.
Having said all that our walk along the sea front and battlements was most enjoyable partly because there are no gulls there. They are all in town causing mayhem and mess.

The castle is very small, just a fortified staircase and a ruined tower but the Elizabethan ramparts surround most of the town and offer good walks and views as well as benches to sit and enjoy the views

Beautiful stunning view some of the places. Just suitable to walk around approx 1 hr. Highly recommend it.

Berwick upon Tweed is the most underrated place in Northumberland, avoid the main street as it is a little run down, instead find the quayside and the shops and cafes in that area, have a walk around the old town walls, they are better than York, or Chester as you get a change of view at every turn, from the old bridges to the estuary, out to sea, the golf course and either of the 2 beaches and much more, try exploring the old town with it's splendid array of historic buildings and they are so quiet.
We stayed for 4 nights and never left the city as there are pubs, restaurants, shops, a playhouse, cinema etc.
Brilliant place all round.

stopped off on our way to Scotland and had a lovely walk along the Ramparts. Good to have the tourist boards to show you where about's you are and what each section is.

Amazing day out! Parked in the carpark at the bottom of town for free! Walked the full town along the castle walls. Visited the pier too. Great for any ages, fantastic views, parks (for children) along the route. English heritage information signs everywhere. Lowry trail good too. Definitely worth a free visit. Weather did help as it was glorious. Take a picnic and enjoy an unspoilt view of the North Sea.

From the ramparts you have great views inside and out. Not a place for someone who doesn't like heights as some of the drops are steep (and generally unguarded), but there is an upper and lower path so everyone is catered for. Easy access from various points with free car parks at hand.
