We loved the fact that we could take our dog off the lead. We saw a previous review about too many dogs off leads. It's about responsible owners & also responsible parents watching their children. The park is big enough to cater for everyone to enjoy.

An amazing county park that leads to some of the bigger more well known trails. A cafe is also available for a sit down and a coffee. Highly recommended,

Far to many dogs running around off the lead, what happens if a dog attacked a child, another dog, or anything else. It's a public place and all dogs should be kept on the lead.

Free parking here and a large country park with a mixture of woodland, open fields, some flat paths and some inclines. There’s a pond which is used for fishing. Visitor centre has a cafe and toilets. Staff were helpful and friendly and we enjoyed coffee and scones. We don’t like strong coffee and they were able to provide instant. There is a corner of the park where there are bird feeders set up to watch the birds. There’s a gentle climb up to ‘Hardwick view’ where you can see the National Trust property at Hardwick Hall in the distance.

This is a pleasant country park in rural Nottinghamshire. It occupies the site of ancient woodlands and hill forts which can be traced back to the early 17th century, though its more recent history is linked to the site of the Sutton Colliery. The colliery’s pit shafts were sunk in 1873; it was known locally as Brierley Hill as the shafts were sunk by miners from Brierley Hill in Staffordshire; they had relocated to the area seeking employment. In the late 1970s the old colliery spoil hills were regraded and grassed, starting the transformation into the park. The colliery completely closed in 1989, and the transition to parkland was completed.

There’s something for everyone here. There’s a couple of miles of walking paths, through meadows, grasslands and wooded areas, but after recent rain some of the paths were very muddy and slippery and required considerable care. The paths are popular with dog walkers (dogs must be kept on a lead), and with joggers and cyclists; there are a number of exercise stations on the circular route. One path will lead you to a spot where you can see the historic stately home, Hardwick Hall, in the distance.

This was my second visit to the park; my first visit was a couple of years ago when the wildflower meadows were at their floral best. The meadowlands and fields were awash with colour from buttercups, exotic wild orchards, and many other different wildflowers. Some of my photos show the wildflowers from that visit. The different seasons will of course give you different perspectives of the park. On this visit remnants of the golds of autumn were still visible.

There’s a small lake, Brierley Waters, where fishing is permitted. A variety of waterfowl can be found here and in the adjoining wetlands. There’s also a bird feeding area along one of the paths.

There are some visible reminders of the park’s mining history, with a couple of old colliery winding wheels along one of the paths, a small memorial to a mining disaster that took place in 1957, and some oak sculptures of the five miners who lost their lives.

The park actually has a designated sculpture trail, created in 1999. The trail includes a stone seat carved with poetry by Benjamin Zaphaniah, an iron wildlife arch, the 5 oak figures of miners, and a curious wooden seat with a hole in it. There’s also a couple of sculptures next to the lake. One depicts a giant seed emerging from an old and broken industrial mould, apparently symbolising rebirth. On the other side of the lake there’s three dishes resembling satellite dishes; it’s a bit bizarre and I have no idea what it means, apart from reminding you that the phone signal in the park is fairly poor.

There’s a visitors’ centre which includes a cafe and toilet facilities, but with the pandemic crisis and England being in lockdown at the time of our visit, there’s were firmly closed. There’s an excellent adventure playground for the youngsters.

I enjoyed visiting the park, but it shouldn’t be on the top of your list if your time in Nottinghamshire or nearby Derbyshire is limited. I suggest you visit the Major Oak in Sherwood Forest if you are only after one natural environment to explore, rather than Brierley Forest Park. The main entrance to the park is on Skegby Road in the small town of Huthwaite. Follow the brown tourist signs. There’s ample parking there.

First visit to the park. ( on a sunday ) Great for fresh air and dog walks. Lots of different routes to take and views to see. But there are no toilets or tea room/coffee shop. The building is there ( fairly new ) but its all shuttered up and bit tatty.
Just be aware if you taking young kids or need to pee alot. Busy too so the kids had to find a quiet place out the way carefully.

An absolutely wonderful park to waste a couple of hours walking around. Almost makes me want to take up fishing again.
