Hubby and me visited Oswestry on a recent Wednesday. We parked on the central car park (entrance off Salop Road/exit onto Smithfield Road). We paid £3 for 4-6 hours (coin meter). Access to the public toilets needed a 20p coin! We walked to the nearby Visitor/Exhibition Centre (via St. Oswald's Churchyard) where it was free to use their toilet facilities. This impressive 15th century building used to be a grammar school. It was surprisingly warm and cosy inside. There was a small gift shop and cafe area on the ground floor. The staff were very helpful.

We walked up some creaky steps (mind your head!) to the art exhibition area upstairs. The floorboards were uneven due to their age. I particularly liked the sculpture of the dead war horse by Michele Coxon (local artist). It was a memorial to the millions of horses killed in World War 1. Its carcass was created from bones of dead animals, rusty scrap metal and rotten wood. Bendy wires formed the mane and tail. It was all joined together with papier-mache and entangled in barbed wire.

If you are visiting Oswestry for the first time, I recommend you call in here.

What a great place to visit. Interesting exhibition upstairs (Wilfred Owen) and a good lunch downstairs. Ladies all very friendly. The pianist was an entertainer. A perfect way to round off our visit to Oswestry.

Always a great welcome, good food, an interesting shop, changing Art Displays - and some excellent background piano music

This is a really old building and the beams and overall floors are really nice, just adds a little something as opposed to the sometimes clinical surroundings you can find yourself in. Staff are very nice and really helpful and there was a gentleman playing the piano when we were there - absolutely delightful and very charming. The food is pretty scrumptious as well, they put fruit in their salad which I love! Really lovely place - have been a number of time and it's always nice

Went for information, of which there was plenty, but also enjoyed coffee and cake. Fascinating building.

Lovely historic building, staff knowledgeable about the history of the building and the town. We went on the guided town walk which lasted for an hour and good value at £2 per person. There is also a small cafe and shop. Visit the upper floor which is also accessible to visitors. Friendly staff with lots of knowledge.

Visited for lunch. A bit quirky but that adds to its charm. Good variety on the menu. We all choose The Salmon Fish cakes, which came with homemade chutney and coleslaw plus side salad. Excellent , clearly homemade fish cakes as well, and very tasty. Clean tables and friendly staff and very reasonably priced. Will return.

It is an interesting place to visit as it has a lot of history and was built in 1407 as a grammar school and bought by the town in 1781 to be used as a workhouse and sold in 1808 to be used as a laundry for the new school and later used as dwelling houses. It is so fortunate that the building was restored and eventually used as a Visitor Centre. If you go upstairs you will be able to be aware of the age of the building from the higgledy piggledy floorboards. There are various information boards around and leaflets and the staff are very friendly and there is also a café.

This is an example of how to run a good tourist information office. Lots of pamphlets, maps and walking guides available.

If the local authorities are thinking of closing this place then they need their heads examining.

We visited the centre whilst walking round Oswestry - had tea and cakes in the cafe - and was told that the council planned to close it! Please sign the petition to keep it open!
