After a near two-year hiatus, due to COVID, this delightful enterprise has recommenced horse-drawn operations. Bespoke charter trips, running from Canal Central in Maesbury Marsh, can be booked throughout the summer. These excursions must be pre-booked, as the original weekend timetable has been suspended. However, these ‘single bubble’, covid-secure trips are proving to be extremely popular with families and friends alike. Charter price, for up to 12 passengers, is £80/hr, the current favourite being the 2hr return voyage up to Aston Locks.
The experienced team continue to delight with their knowledgeable commentary and boating stories. The star of the show is still Cracker the Boathorse, who captivates everyone with his characterful behaviour.

A great family day out with Cracker the boat horse and his team of human helpers drawing us in a custom-made canal boat. There was plenty of opportunities to stretch out legs if we wanted to. The children liked helping to open and close the lock gates and when we reached half way, there was a pub where we bought a takeaway beer (bring your own plastic/paper cups for this!)

We went on this canel boat trip on Saturday 7th September with my husband
We had a amazing trip made all the better by the lovely Rita who really looked after us
I have booked this trip again for Saturday 14th September and will be bringing my 2 sisters

After a good meal at the Horseshoes inn at Berriew, we then went on the narrowboat on theMontgomery canal. Cracker, the horse, towed us. A very friendly, family run venture.Lots of wild life. Would recommend this for families. A little gem away from the hustle and bustle.

There was a time when in the countryside you could hear only the birdsong, the breeze in trees, the lapping of water on the river bank. That disappeared with roads and rail and technology. The horse drawn river cruise run by Bywater Cruises takes you back to that earlier, more gentle, quieter time as Cracker the horse pulls the narrow boat along a stretch of the Montgomery Canal near Oswestry, under arching bridges, close to archeological relics, past canal-side inns. All to the sound of the horse’s hooves on the towpath, the water lapping on the boat’s rudder and the gentle chat of the crew explains the history of the canals. This was a wonderful nostalgic trip out. The people who run the trips are all so nice, there is a lovely cafe [homemade soup was delicious], the little boat [a replica victorian packet boat] is pulled along by Cracker the horse in peaceful silence. Our trip was for two hours and afterwards we went back to the cafe for lunch. On fine days there is a picnic area outside and cute little cabins to sit in, easy access car parking. The toilets are accessible and there is s small gift shop as well. High recommended and not over priced. We even transferred one of our party on to the boat and took his wheelchair along with us. We all loved our trip.

A gentle reminder of times gone by. Quiet, peaceful, graceful and above all good value for money. We had a lovely time, an ice cream to begin the trip and a lovely meal in the town to end.
