Der Weg schlängelt sich entlang des Ufers entlang und alle paar meter muss man innehalten, schauen und fotografieren. So viele tolle Ausblicke kriegt man selten geboten. Cradle mountain und insb. Dove Lake sind absolute Sehenswürdigkeiten

This hike is rather long, i.e. around 5 hours, but only if you don't spend a lot of time on taking pictures. Overall we lost one additional hour on pics and videos.
We suggest going counter clockwise, so when starting, go left at the first crossroad. Then the major part of climbing up the hill is in the forest and thus cooler.
The climb is really interesting, because vegetation changes drastically like every hour. The lake itself is rather boring in our opinion. Biggest downside here is that it's not really accessible. Yes, we know it's a national park and it's all about preserving nature and wildlife, but there would not be great harm when having good access to the lake at a small area and possibly a bench to sit on.
Be aware, naturally there's wildlife. We saw several snakes on our way up and down, all circa 15 minutes around the lake. These are venemous, so in general you will need to pay attention on where you are going and stepping. They avoid you, so it's up to you to make yourselves visible.

Shadow Lake is one of the day-walks you can do from Lake St Clair. It's a nice walk - but I'd argue it's not really worthy of being one of Tasmania's "60 Great Short Walks". The lake or tarn is nice, but no more than any other alpine lake. Do either the Mt Rufus circuit OR Little Hugel summit instead - both of these are many times nicer. The section between Shadow Lake and Mt Rufus is spectacular, especially in summer with the flowering scoparia, and the ascent of Little Hugel is good fun and there's great views from the top!

We walked to the top of Mt Rufus and then back down via Shadow Lake. It was about 20km and took about 7 hours. There was a total altitude gain of 700m to the peak of Mt Rufus which was just over 1400 metres.
The first section of the walk was steadily uphill with lots of vegetation and not much views. After about 2 hours we reached the part where the Shadow Lake circuit track split off and we emerged from the trees to finally see what we thought was Mt Rufus. That was pretty cool. We then had some more steep uphill climbing to do to get onto the ridgeline. Then the views really opened up to a spectacular panorama of mountains everywhere including a couple of spots with snow in December! We also then realised Mt Rufus was a bit further away then expected and did another hour of trudging uphill to get to the top. It was perfect weather and you could see everything. It was excellent.
The path back to the visitor centre was longer and took about 4 hours. We went through a lot of completely different areas of vegetation which was very interesting from shrubs to eucalypts to giant mossy pine trees to a bog to some sort of jurassic forest. There was a lot of wooden boardwalks but some of them were disintegrating a bit and sometimes the path got a bit muddy or rocky or covered in tree roots.
Shadow lake was not very shadowy and you only caught a brief glimpse before moving on. By the time we returned to the visitor centre we were pretty exhausted. We got to see a wild echidna upclose as well as a lot of skinks and a wallaby.
Overall I think the Mt Rufus summit may add a lot of work to the walk but the views are well worth it. Without it the views would be pretty average.
We also were very lucky to visit in perfect warm, clear weather. It would not be like that all year.
This is definitely not an easy walk. You will need a reasonable degree of fitness.

Great walk, interesting terrain and flora. Some level of fitness needed to walk the complete circuit

Graded as an intermediate walk we thought we would be up for it. We did make it but the climb up was a lot harder than expected. Not much in the way of wildlife but a beautiful walk all the same. Very pleased we did it.

Walked into Shadow Lake on Friday afternoon carrying packs. The climb is hard in that it is all up hill on the way in. The camping ground at Shadow Lake is well set out and the water at Shadow Lake is drinkable so don't carry in any extra water - bonus! There are no toilets anywhere so don't forget to bring your bush trowel. The scenery around the lake is beautiful with a small beach around the lake and mountains and nature at its best to look at. We did Mount Rufus track on Saturday but only walked up for 2.5 hours and then headed back to enjoy the tranquility of the Shadow Lake beach front. You need to have at least 7 hours to walk the whole comfortably - did see more people than expected doing this walk on the day. Half our party chose to do the circuit and the other half came back the way we had come in - much easier going back doing this. The visitor center was a welcome sight and so was the hot chocolate.

We lucked it with 2 cloud free days at lake saint Clare. On day 2 we did the Shadow lake walk clockwise having decided mid point not to do Mt Rufus.
It’s a tough walk with many places only a foot hold wide but other areas have platforms over moors. It’s a varied landscape and geology which makes it all the more enjoyable.
We came across3 snakes but being summer it was expected. We took 6 hours butthat was with many a stop for photos and a 3/4 hr lunch at Shadow Lake.
When completed we did feel a sense of accomplishment but hey were over 50.

We were recommended to do the Shadow Lake walk and backtrack on the same path as it was shorter. We felt good once we got to the top so decided to take the circuit which was a bit longer than backtracking. We were so glad we did as the scenery and changes in vegetation were much more interesting.
Interestingly we didn't pass any other walkers for the last 2.5 hours of our walk.
