We arrived on a rainy Friday and were treated to a private tour of the home by Andrew. He was incredibly knowledgeable and had a passion for what he was doing.
He is part of the team that delves into the artifacts and their history and it showed.
Very worth the trip!

Did a 12:30 45 minute house tour, saw rooms in the house (but no flash photography is allowed). The tour guide was very knowledgeable.
You can also walk around the grounds and see the visitor center.

While driving across the upper Midwest, we took a brief detour off of I-90 to visit this National Historic Site, in the mid-afternoon in August. The site consists of a historic house, a visitors center, and the grounds around them. You can't enter the house unless you're part of a guided tour, but you're free to walk around the grounds. The grounds were well-kept, and the healthy tree canopy provided us with ample shade, keeping us comfortable. The visitor's center had some information about the life of former President Garfield (which unfortunately was cut short due to an assassination). That said, we came away a bit unsatisfied with the way that his biography was presented, and had to look up some more information on our own after we left.

We arrived at the site early but this enabled us to take a cell phone tour of the grounds. Only 8 of the original 118 acres remain as part of the historic site. Among the structures on the land are a windmill and a small building behind the house which Garfield used as his campaign headquarters
Inside the Visitor Center we watched a movie about Garfield,s life and then took the tour of the house. Our guide was a volunteer named Carole. She was laidback but very knowledgeable and she gave an excellent tour.
Garfield purchased the farm in1876. The original 1 1/2 story house was expanded from 9 rooms to 20. Fol!owing Garfield,s death, funds raised for his wife, Lucretia, allowed her to add the large, memorial library wing and the fireproof vault to preserve her husbands presidential papers. Garfield was assassinated only months following his election and she didn,t want him to be forgotten.
The first front porch presidential campaign took pace here in 1880. The railroad ran behind the property which enabled 17,000 people to see him. That is how the house got the name Lawnfield. The house was occupied until 1936. It is now managed by the National Park Service and admission is free.
In the Visitor Center is a special mattress which was designed so the President could be transported to the NJ seashore where he died in September 1880.

Having seen the McKinley and Hayes museums on the same trip, Garfield puts them in the rear view mirror. Like the formal presidential museums from Hoover on, this museum gives the full view of the man and his times. The Garfield home is part of the site and docents give a great deal of background information and are knowledgeable in response to questions. There is also an audio program you can use on your phone to tour the extensive grounds. Everything is neat and tidy, sometimes hard to do with many visitors. Plenty of free parking on site and the entire visit is free.

We spent 2+ hours here as it was so enjoyable and informative. The movie was great and so was the house tour. Museum on site too - be sure to look at the structure of the museum as it is in the old carriage house. Amazing large home and quite the story also.

This is an interesting presidential stop to learn about a president who only served in office a short time. The free tour of the house was informative. It is operated by the National Park Service. Most of the furnishings are original. The site is small and easily navigable in a couple of hours.

This place was an unexpected gem! The Visitor Center has a nice collection of items and provides a good glimpse in to life of The Garfield family. We visited with our 13, 12 and 11 year olds as a way to kill a little time before a baseball game. We looked around the Visitor Center before taking a tour of the house. The house and grounds are beautifully preserved and our tour guide was wonderful. Because the house stayed in the family for so long, most pieces are original! All of us enjoyed the visit and we’re glad we stopped. Definitely recommend if you have an hour or more to spend!

All of the people in the museum and the woman who gave the tour were very knowledgeable and pleasant. We learned so many facts about President Garfield being in office and his family. Although the tour had a lot of people, the woman kept all under control so her informative words were heard.

I would plan on at least two hours. The house tour is docent led, thus time controlled, but then time to linger on the grounds and in the museum are also needed. Don't miss the film.
