Something for everyone

Kendrick Woods is north of Spencerville, west of Lima, and south of Delphos so it is a little off the beaten path. It is well worth the drive though as there truly is something for everyone. There is a large paved parking lot, picnic shelters, a playground, flush restrooms, a pond for fishing or ice skating, an accessible boardwalk loop "All peoples" trail, and a couple miles of dirt hiking or cross country ski trails, depending on the season. My only complaint with the All Peoples trail is there are no kick rails and the boards are perpendicular rather than horizontal so it could be easy to get a standard wheelchair caught in the seams if you aren't careful. We did it, the Hickory Trail, and the South Trail, including the entire loop. The park is also designated a state nature preserve and a watchable wildlife area. It certainly is ideal deer habitat. We didn't see any but did see recent tracks. That may have been due to the tragic event we witnessed. While we there, all the frogs at the marsh croaked. Seriously, don't miss the marsh- an environment not usually found in the middle of a forest- and the artesian spring nearby. Follow your nose- it has a high sulfur content. We were the only ones on the trail system that day. Two families were at the picnic shelter but other than that we had all 500 acres to ourselves and thoroughly enjoyed our visit.
