Some of these hidden gems are far off the beaten path. We travelled to 5 of them and some were down 1 lane gravel roads. This made for not only an interesting drive but a challenge too. They were very cool to see once you arrive.

Our first trip trying to visit as many of the covered bridges as possible in a day... didn't go well as the "trail" is not at all easy to follow. If there were signs they were super small and we couldn't figure out the "trail" at all. Managed to locate most of the bridges by using a visitors bureau map that a nice lady gave us at one of the bridges. Not sure why it's called a trail as it really not or somebody removed most of the signs?

My wife and I had a great day exploring part of the covered bridge trail. The scenery is beautiful and worth the drive on paved and gravel roads. We picked up a map at the Covered Bridge Festival office in Jefferson at the county courthouse. The map was fairly easy to follow but you have to be careful looking for the signs along the road that mark the trail. Be patient with your self and your traveling companion if you make a wrong turn.
We were here in mid-September before the leaves turned. We can't image how spectacular the scenery would be a few weeks later.
If you are traveling with children or bored teens you might want to consider hitting only a few of the bridges, especially where kids could wade in some of the shallow rivers.

I am not sure why the heading for this says WAYNE Ashtabula County. There is, of course, a Wayne County in Ohio and I think there might be some covered bridges there but these counties are not in the same area at all (although they could both be considered in Northeast Ohio). In any event we were staying at Geneva-on- the-Lake and decided to take a few hours to see some of the bridges in the western part of the county. It was a bit of a challenge finding a few of the bridges. I had found a map on line and each bridge had a picture and an address (and a nice short description) but wicked Siri occasionally delivered us to a spot with no bridge whatsoever. So it was sometimes an adventure to find our way to the bridge. Our wanderings did lead us past a number of Amish farms which was a nice diversion. Since I am a New England native, covered bridges are hardly new to me, but visiting these charming structures in their Ohio settings was a pleasant way to spend an afternoon.

Picked up a map at the information center/gift shop at Haprpersfield Bridge and headed out - lots of covered bridges and each one is unique. The addresses on the map when using our Garman often told us we were there when there was no bridge in sight but with perseverance you can usually find what you are looking for. Probably a beautiful tour to take in autumn.

We had a beautiful day of sightseeing of the covered bridges. Our guide Ginger new all the history of all of the beautiful bridges.

We stopped and looked at many of the bridges and structures. Only thing confusing was that two bridges were listed as the longest in the US. Some have mininium requirments for height and load.

We saw all the bridges in 2 days. There is a great variety of styles. The access to some of the bridges is via a gravel road.

Viewing the covered bridge tour near Ashtabula, Ohio is always a pleasant way to spend a day. Fall is the best time for this tour as one can also then enjoy the colorful fall leaf display. The longest (Smollen Bridge) and shortest covered bridges in Ohio are included in the tour (See photos). Check website for map and driving details.

I just found this map. We haven't gone yet but I found one that I think will be helpful. Go to "visit ashtabula county" and from the 'explore & play' drop down click on covered bridges. Scroll down to a downloadable map.
