Really nice backpacking trail. Sites have pit toilet & running water. Trail did have some blowdown from recent storms. Get to sites early for a good camping spot!

We went backpacking at Zaleski based on some reviews we read. (unfortunately we only found the positive ones before we went there and then found the negative ones afterward.) We wondered why all of the YouTube videos didn't show much and they were either in the fall or winter. This place is a jungle in the summer. It's so dense, there is a canopy holding in all of the humidity. The trails were a mess. Down trees everywhere. I didn't know Ohio had swamps and this area is surrounded by them. The mosquitoes were insane. The only two positives were they did have awesome water available and the camping areas were very nice. Maybe this place is better in the fall.

We use Zalenski for hiking and you have a couple trails to choose from. The lake trail is about 3 miles each was (put and back) and offers nice views of the lake. There is also an 11 mile trail for those who have 4-5 hours to kill. These trails are easy exception for the distance which some may say is moderate.

Great area! I’ve been to Hocking Hills (cascade, ash, old mans, rock bridge etc) several times but new to Zalesaki. Checked out the Hope Lake campground and did a short day hike into site 1 on the backpack loop. Pretty easy trip in and back but not for the faint of heart. Right mixture of elevation changes and plateaus. Beautiful scenery and very peaceful!

There used to be a bridge over the bog, but now the trail head is south of the parking lot - there's a huge sign. There are two loops of the back packing trail, one longer, with an access road adjacent. There are four inch marker posts, and missed one and continued too far up the road, walking 16 miles instead of 9! Trevor the dog was pooped!

This is my third trip to Zaleski this season, doing the north loop again. I took the western route of the loop up (therefore a clockwise direction), completed its northeastern loop (that starts/ends at camp 3), and returned to the registration area by the more easterly portion of the loop...so ~ 17 miles. Started about 3:30 on Thurs, arrived to camp 3 well before dark, hiked the rest Fri morning, done by 1:00 pm. I'm in the latter half of my 60s (but hike plenty) and would rate Zaleski North loop intermediate. I think a trail deserves 2 ratings: one for the physiologic effort and one for the navigation effort. Physiologically, its a lower intermediate. Yes, you might be panting a few times, but nothing like the north loop of Shawnee where you frequently have the urge to stop and rest to catch your breath). Zaleski has switchbacks, for example; Shawnee has none. Still, take your walking sticks; you don't need to roll an ankle and it's harder than walking in your neighborhood park. The "extra" loop from camp 3 is not as well traveled, so is a bit overgrown but just well enough marked. I lost maybe 10 min looking for trail markers, nothing worse. There was water at camp 3 and with a 2.5L hydration bag, I never had to filter, though streams were plentiful enough if camp 3's water supply was empty.
In short, I like Zaleski-- The camps are clean, if you start on Thurs, not many people, potable water, well marked trails, and will not require a day of recovery when completed.

We love this forest with its ravines and gorges and winding paths. Nature at its very best indeed. A little spot of heaven on earth!

Zaleski will test your mountain-goat hiking skills, especially if you are from the flatlands of Ohio like I am. With over 20,000 acres and miles of well-marked and maintained trails, you really can't go wrong. There is wilderness camping available off trails as well as tent, RV and cabins camping available at nearby Lake Hope State Park.
Have done three hiking trips here, two long and one short, and all have been exceptional. Short trails for families with younger kids wanting to get out in the wilderness as well as long trails for the die-hard backpacker looking for a weekend challenge,
Highly recommend.

Is there supplied potable water at the camp sites? Are there accessible natural water sources that could be purified for drinking?

There is drinking water at the campgrounds from what I presume are well pumps. I wouldn't use other water found in the area because of prior mining.

Hi,
Do you have any EASY backpack trails to recommend for a brand new hiker? We were thinking Zalenski, but read your remarks and are worried about going there for our first overnight. Thanks

I have hiked many locations in central and southern/southeastern Ohio. They are a lot the same difficulty, since the hills are similar heights, probably due to their common glacial origin (could be wrong about that). The way to guarantee a fairly flat hike is a rail-to-trail, since railroads could only take a very gentle grade. There are several in Ohio. Athens has one, for instance. But Zaleski and the other Ohio parks are not really considered hard. The south loop has only 3 climbs worth mentioning, each about 300 feet.
