We now know that a very hot Sunday In September with the temperature pushing 100 is not the time to visit. The VC is closed on Sundays, we knew that, but found enough info. and maps on line. We found the boardwalk and overlook, but so hot and dry nothing to see. Explored a number of the roads and found the river. Any wildlife was hunkered down and smarter than us to be out in the heat. This place must be better in the cool and wet seasons.

The signs leading into the property were in terrible shape which should’ve been a sign of what we would find at the NWR. There was a mattress in the middle of the road and several old couches and stuff dumped at the old gravel pit by the entrance. We found beer cans and trash everywhere. We never actually made it into the park because we were concerned what else we might find. It was disappointing to say the least. We spoke to some locals later in the day and they informed us that the area has become a popular hangout for teenagers who don’t respect it. Hopefully it’ll get cleaned up so other can enjoy it.

Mainly dirt roads. Entrance is free and visitation is sunrise to sunset. Excellent birding during Spring migration.

LRNWR is a unique area—a Central Flyway for migratory birds and the home to many “champion”trees. We spent several peaceful and interesting hours there. We were fortunate enough to run into Gary, the Ranger, who suggested we walk down to where the LR creek meets the river, a great tip. Surrounded by Weyerhaeuser Lumber land, this bit of preserved nature is worth valuing and experiencing.

On a birding road trip, this was a great stop. Down a couple dirty roads and then walking in quite nature. I will go here again

We saw the sign on the highway pointing to this wildlife refuge. There are different areas of the refuge where you turn off on different roads. I think it is mainly for birds, but we saw a wild hog in one area and some turtles sunning on a log in another area.
