G.A. R. stands for Grand Army of the Republic, the veterans who fought on the Union side in America’s Civil War. Miami’s G.A.R Cemetery contains the graves of many Civil War veterans, both Union and Confederate, but this is not the only reason that history buffs and other tourists are attracted to it. A section of the cemetery contains a British Flyers Memorial with the graves of more than a dozen young British pilots who died while training at a flight school that was operated in Miami during World War II. Over the years, many relatives have come from the UK to visit the memorial and take part in commemorative services. We visited the memorial during our tour of the cemetery and found the experience to be both emotional and educational.

Check out the G.A.R monument on the entrance road. Weekday visitors can stop by the cemetery office during normal business hours and get relevant information and materials.

While every community has its own cemetery, it is rare to find a cemetery that contains British World War II veterans (flyers) buried next to American Civil War veterans.

GAR Cemetery is the only grave site I visited that contains an Indian chief who paid for his own bronze statute.

An American lady is buried next to the British veterans with a stone paid for by The British Military.

This cemetery is great for families with small children and is free.
