We have enjoyed learning about John Ross as we toured Cherokee Nation sites around Tahlequah and Park Hill. We continued that journey here. We also trekked up the hill to his gravesite. If you are in Park Hill, this is worth a quick stop after Hunter’s Home.

This was our first stop at all the local museums. The admission is free, and it is owned by the Cherokee Nation. The building is an old school house filled with a lot of information concerning John Ross' leadership and the history of his family. The man working it was very informative giving us a lot of good information about the area. It is a good starting point for the rest of the museums.

John Ross was the Principal Chief of the Cherokee during the most trying times of their history. John Ross was the Chief during the "Removal Act," more commonly known as the "Trail of Tears," the most horrendous and tragic event in all of the Cherokee history...and a travesty of and sad chapter of U.S. History. He oversaw the removal, travels and misery on the trail(John Ross' wife died on the "Trail of Tears"), and the many accomplishments once the Cherokee had taken up residence in the area which is now North East Oklahoma. He was also, still the Cherokee Chief during the Civil War. Many battles occurred on Cherokee land, which saw much destruction and death during the war. Most Cherokee buildings and homes were burned and destroyed by the invaders. The explanation of all these events, and more, plus how John Ross persevered and held the Cherokee Nation together during these incredibly hard times are shown and documented in this very small museum. It's a small place with a BIG message. If you are interested in US and/or Native American history, this is a must see museum!

This is a very nice little museum that tells the history of John Ross. The family cemetery is a short distance behind, which I would also recommend seeing. This museum is self-guided (it's just two rooms) with displays and some interactive things for the younger set. There is a small gift shop, but the best thing about this museum is the person behind the counter taking admission and selling souvenirs. He is well-versed in everything Cherokee related, and was very desirous of answering any questions I might have. He kept asking me if I had any questions, until I came up with one to ask. We had a long conversation on whether Stand Watie was a good guy, or a bad guy, as a popular children's book portrays him one way, while the Cherokee Nation sees him differently. For anyone who wants to know anything about the politics of the Cherokees during the Civil War, you can find out here.

Very simple school house of the Cherokee after removal to Indian Territory in current Oklahoma. Justin, who was on duty the day I was there, was very well educated and we had a very lengthy conversation about our Cherokee ancestors.

This home is beautiful and has a wealth of information about John Ross, the man who represented and defended the Cherokee in Washington D.C. I would highly recommend this attraction and don't forget to check out the cemetery.

A small museum housed in what was once a school room tells the story of John Ross. Not a lot to see here if you know his story. Tiny gift shop and bathroom available. The highlight for me was visiting his grave in the cemetery in the back of the property. I suggest driving to it if you have any mobility issues or are short on time. His grave is near the center surrounded by a small chained fence. Open Tuesday-Saturday 10am-4pm. Admission $3 or included with a Compass pass. Right down the street a ways from the Cherokee Heritage Center. Allow less than an hour to visit.
