Old fashioned melodrama
We really enjoyed our evening here. We arrived without a reservation but they squeezed us in. The play is a melodrama with hero and villain and the audience is supposed to cheer and jeer as appropriate.

Try it - you'll like it,

Ok so the building is run down and needs some work but the drunkard is worth overlooking the aesthetics. The Spotlight Theater is run entirely by volunteers who love what they are doing. We are greeted at the door by friendly people who were glad to see us and wanted us to have a good time.
The theater is small. Don't go hungry, they have canned soft drinks, beer, bags of chips and candy bars.
They start with a variety of entertainment--and then do the play.
Audience participation is encouraged.
It was a lot of fun, put it on your bucket list!

Old fashioned melodrama

If you have never seen an old fashioned melodrama, this is a must. In the tradition of the turn of the century melodramas with lots of audience participation. The pace of the play is slow compared to modern day plays and movies as well as the plot leaving something to be desired compared to modern day plays, but for an opportunity to step back in time for a historical treat, seeing The Drunkard at the Spotlight is well worth the visit.

Theater is old and historic, Drunkard show not a winner

This is a neat little theater right on the river so it could be a great experience. Theater is small and holds about 60 or so people. We were about the only ones attending on a Saturday night besides a tour bus of people from an out of town assisted living community. Maybe I don't understand the melodrama concept but it was not my thing. Boo/Hiss participation during show and buy cloth tomatoes to throw at the villain. My view was that it was very cheesy but others may enjoy this. They sell sodas/beer/wine coolers and chips and candy at a reasonable price. Restroom access was easy for me but it was up a couple stairs unless they had a handicapped one somewhere else that I did not see.

Went with 3 other couples. We can literally walk there from where we live. It's a bizarre experience. Not into the sing alongs. Not very wheelchair friendly. Pretty dumpy. Sandwiches like you pack for a 1st grader. Just feels like they are guilting you for money and praise. Awkward.

Clean Family Fun
Polish off your best "boos", "yays", and hisses. Tulsa Spotlight Theater offers the longest running melodrama in our country. Light refreshments can be ordered and you can get coffee in your very own mug (purchased separately). The melodrama is fun for the entire family and before the final act, you can actually purchase stuffed tomatoes to lob at the villain of the play. After the melodrama, there is a variety show called the olio which showcases area talents of all types. Before the show begins, there is a old fashioned sing-a-long. This was such a fun night for my family.

We had a fun night at the Spotlight Theatre. The people were fun and they included all the patrons. More choice on soft drinks might be nice.

Group of 6 friends saw the DRUNKARD and the OLIO in April. Oldest running play in Oklahoma. Joe Sears was the current Director of the Drunkard. We had a blast! The show is performed in an old Nostalgic place with history behind it. There is nothing new here. So if you want to experience history, and fun like nothing else in Tulsa, go see.
