The history and activities provided are: Trail of Tears History which explained how The Choctaw leaders approached an inevitable relocation by US government (1800's) peacefully yet suffered great hardships disease, hunger and death... along the Trail (forced march). The museum tells of the history since: their difficulties and successes as they have tried to retain their culture, language, music and traditions.
The museum also had information, exhibitions and demonstrations regarding the history of: hunting and weapons, arts and craft, traditional dress and ceremonies. We found out how all these skills are being retained and passed on to the next generation. Another aspect which is being developed is the link between The Choctaw and The Irish. During the Gorta Mor (great hunger) in Ireland the impoverished Chowtaw raised $170 for the relief funds to help The Irish as they suffered great hardships, disease, hunger, death and immigration (forced). It was great to hear how the Choctaw had great empathy for the Irish in their time of need. We would visit again....we will visit again.

This is a very nice museum. The exhibit and film on the Choctaw Code Talkers in World War One is wonderfully done.

Being part Choctaw, I was always interested in going to the headquarters in Durant and the museum at Tuskahoma. The grounds were beautiful and the museum was thought - provoking. The Choctaws were the first tribe to be "removed" from the five civilized nations in the South: they were picked for the experiment as they were the most "civilized". The federal government managed to bungle all three years of removal, ending in the starvation, sickness and dying of a substantial number. This was the original Trail of Tears, subsequently followed by other tribes later on.
Every year, the Choctaws hold a memorial walk to remember this: I was proud to take part in it this May.

My apologies to those finding my review of the Veteran's Memorial at Choctaw, Oklahoma in this location! I gave TripAdvisor very specific information about the name, location, etc. of this attraction, and yet it was still posted under the wrong listing!

IT IS LOCATED IN THE CITY OF CHOCTAW, OK
