lots of birds, wildlife and EAGLES !!!!!! you can't miss an opportunity to drive throught the Sequoyah Nation Wildlife Refuge. Stop the car get out and take in the sounds of all the birds..... magnificent.

Driving through and walking the trails was so beautiful. Unfortunately part was closed for construction, but there was plenty to see anyway. We were there in January. Got to see a bald eagle on its nest. Many herons, different kinds of ducks, even a loon. Many, many songbirds, and THOUSANDS of red-wing blackbirds. Visitor center was closed because of Covid, but the outhouses were open.

We saw multiple eagles from the roads. Be sure to take cameras with zoom lenses, scopes, or binoculars. They were magnificent gliding or just sitting. Several nests were able to be seen from the road also. Bathroom facilities are available but very primitive. Great day trip!

Wasn't really sure what to expect- it was beautiful out there. Although, there was a lot of trash floating in the water and alongside the banks. Really wish other would consider the cost of tossing trash out instead of putting it in the provided receptacles.
We picnicked and left- some benches and tables by the visitors' center would be great in the future!

After leaving Oklahoma City and heading east, we were looking for something off the beaten path as our vacation was coming to an end.
We discovered Sequoyah and explored some of the paths and gravel roads. Birds and wildlife abound as you would image.
Unfortunately there was no one working at the visitor center, but we found plenty of materials to read.
I think we saw one other vehicle. This is worth exploration!

We mainly go here for birding. We have been about three times. It is a great place to spend the day. We have seen lots of birds, deer, bobcat, mama skunk with babies playing, live armadillos, feral pigs, raccoons and a few other wildlife. We enjoy the quietness of the refuge. We see others fishing. Pack a meal and spend the day enjoying God’s creation.

This National Wildlife Refuge is rarely crowded and it is free like most National Wildlife Refuges. The Horton Slough nature trail is paved and it takes you through some nice forests next to the water. Very tall cottonwood trees. Good place to look for birds both in the trees and in the water. Turtles are also present. You can also drive in part of the refuge and this allows you to get closer to other water areas for waterfowl and fields where birds may be feeding in the wintertime. Bathrooms are available. A small visitor center is open during the week. A great place to visit any time of the year but for the best birding Spring and Winter are probably good times.

We enjoyed seeing the exhibits since we were staying in the park anyway. It was a rainy weekend. So it was nice to find something indoors.

We visited on a day when there was virtually no one else there. There is a 6 mile drive with numerous access points to the Arkansas river. Fishing and hunting are available. There are 2 developed nature trails. We spent about three hours and could have spent much more. We will return in the future.
