“Hidden gem”

My pre-teens loved it! Curator was very friendly and knowledgeable. The little gift shop was a fun place to buy souvenirs. The displays were very well done! If we ever are in town again, we will definitely return

Afternoon @ The Museum

Always a good time, from the Native American exhibit to the Temple Houston exhibit. Very informative and educational. The Pioneer Plains and Historical Museum has been one of our eight year old's favorite places to visit since the first time we took her almost five years ago.

Very interesting afternoon

My husband and I were taking a visit to Guthrie just to look at the older homes and decided to stop to visit the museum. It was well put together and a very interesting afternoon. It's not a large Museum but we found ourselves reading all of the placards on the wall. They have a well-put-together collection of artifacts from the pioneers and Native Americans that lived in this area a century ago. Well worth the time. Go visit!

Nice informative museum

The museum has a lot info on Sam Houston’s son. It also has info on local pioneers and Native Americans. It is worth stopping by and checking out.

FREE museum with fascinating local history

The Pioneer Museum is fun and interesting for the whole family, not to mention FREE! Often hosts art shows and the gift shop is open for souvenir's! Check it out!

Great little museum!

My family is from the area and we visited the museum to see my cousin's art display. I learned a lot of history I didn't know about Oklahoma, the Indians and the pioneers. Really enjoyed the displays and all of the great history. Will go back again!

Tornados, headdresses, local characters

The 1947 tornado that killed over 100 people remains the highest casualty tornado on record. Well preserved and presented native american treasures. Military history. A sewing machine with 25 needles (and Bobbins) for fancy sewing. A beautiful crystal vase that someone managed to preserve. Custer, Black Kettle, the Battle of the Washita...interesting and educational. All well labeled and presented. Nipper greets you as you enter--remember Nipper? Gift Shop. Donations.

Well Done Museum-Woth a Visit

This museum was much more comprehensive than I anticipated. There is a huge rotunda as you enter with colorful murals. The museum tells the story of Native Americans in the area and the growth of the area from 1880 to present. I particularly enjoyed the exhibits on Comanche Chief Quanah Parker, the 1893 Land Rush, the deadly tornado in 1947, and the huge exhibit on Temple Houston, the youngest child of Sam Houston, who practiced law in Woodward to escape the spotlight of his famous father. There are reconstructed rooms featuring a saloon, doctor's office, post office, etc.
You can enhance your visit by getting the museum's app on your smart phone or a tour link by text message. I spent about an hour here and learned a lot. No charge-donations accepted.
