Baker City has a lot of historical Oregon Trail sites. The Chinese Cemetery is worth a detour. It is easily accessible near the Super 8 Hotel. It was also across from the Broken Mystery Windmill which is identified on Roadside America attractions. It doesn't take much to take in the cemetery. There are two informational signs. One tells of the Chinese immigrant contributions to the area (railroads and goldmining.) The other describes the Prayer House which is still on the grounds. Most of the graves have been removed as bodies have been relocated to China though stone markers outline the former sites. A memorial plaque identifies those that were buried, and one traditional gravestone still remains. It is accessible along the road with free off-street parking available. There is no cost, and it is accessible at any time.

Semi interesting, there is actually still a marked grave there; the others you can see where the remains were dug up and removed. Not too far from town, check it out.

You have to go behind the Highway Patrol office or through a gas station on the north side of the highway to get there, but this is an interesting bit of local history. How sweet that a local group has created this small but meaningful shrine.

A piece of history that could easily be overlooked. But the information was very insightful. A place that offered a quiet reflection about the people who helped build the area.

Okay, don't think of rows of graves with markers. This is not that kind of cemetery. This is more of a history lesson... in a good way!
There is a sign that gives information about how the mid 19th Century Chinese immigrants lived, a modern memorial marker and a small stone [prayer] building. There is also a colorful modern pagoda. The remains have been relocated back to China, but you can see the depressions where people were buried.
I was struck by just how far from town this cemetery was - at least a half hour trip with a horse & wagon. Made me think.
This attraction is just off the freeway, on Windmill Road, just east of the Grocery Outlet and Chevron Station. Worth a quick stop.

Ive been thru it. Its really cool place id really like to see it restored a bit more but i guess thats how time made it happen. Well worth the stop... Its across from the windmill on the outshirts of baker city

While staying at the Super 8 Motel, I had a little time to kill while my husband finished packing up. So I wandered over to the east, where wedged between construction trailers and piles of dumped gravel I found this gem of history. Although it is a sad reminder of how our Chinese brothers and sisters were treated poorly by the predominately white townspeople between 1880 and 1940, it demonstrates the pride, resilience and rich spirituality of the Chinese people who labored in the mines and built roads in the Baker City area. You will find a beautiful pagoda and fascinating stone prayer house, and depressions among the sagebrush where the interred bones were later removed and returned for burial in China. There are several large wooden sign panels that tell of the history of the people and their culture. I would like to see the surrounding area better cared for (it appears industrial and neglected) but I really appreciated this fascinating view into the local history.

An interesting side note for Baker. It is a cemetery, in my mind cemeteries are not something that are real exciting.

I was so disappointed in the cemetery. It has been poorly maintained, is very small and lacks atmosphere of the times when souls were put to rest there. I read the marker and clambored around a bit for a quick visit. Perhaps I was expecting too much.

It was as if I went back in time. To think how much work the Chinese did way back then. There were some roads that were built by the Chinese that are still there today.
