Bundle up & bring your binoculars! The Deschutes River Trail offers wide, paved walkways right along the river, with great viewing for all sorts of birds – from green-headed Mallards & punk-crested Mergansers swimming nearshore, to dazzling blue Scrub Jays posing fearlessly in trees right along the pathway.

Who would think there would be such a variety of birds to see, just steps from Bend’s “Mill District” shopping area! We ventured out with friends on a blustery day in February. In just an hour’s leisurely stroll around the waterfront, we also saw Ring-necked Ducks, Scaups, Coots, Goldeneyes, Canada Geese, and even a Golden-crowned Sparrow almost at our feet.

The meandering walkway further charms with eye-catching art murals, bewitching tunnels, decorative bridges draped with fluttering flags, & historic interpretive signs along the way. When it warms up, there is outside dining at many restaurants bordering the walkway.

It’s a wonderfully scenic stroll, with plenty of room for passing joggers, dog-walkers, folks in wheelchairs, baby carriages, & bird-watcher/photographers like us! Public restrooms are nearby – adjacent to “Sisters Coffee” shop, and just down from Karen Eland’s most delightful “Greetings from Bend Oregon” mural which is immensely popular for selfie photos to send to family & friends! Nearby street parking is free – either off SW Reed Market Road, or in the shopping area.

Don’t miss the “Colorado Bridge Tunnel Mural” by Sandy Klein, with cheerfully painted birds on both sides! One side includes an osprey, with real osprey nest high on a pole just beyond. The other wall has one of my favorite birds – a Kingfisher with a fish. It is a female Kingfisher because she wears a reddish-brown belt (which the male doesn’t have).

Interestingly a few steps beyond that is a notable Kingfisher site by some divine little waterfalls, where you can see a sculptural kingfisher “hunting snag” (created by Andrew Wachs & Dylan Woock). Be sure to watch for kingfishers there!

For more on Kingfishers, check out the new award-winning book “Halcyon Journey – In Search of the Belted Kingfisher” by Bend birder/nature writer – Marina Richie. Her book won the 2022 National Outdoor Book Award, & celebrates the Belted Kingfisher as our “Ambassador for Saving Wild Waterways.”

Happy birding!

Deschutes River Trail is listed as about 12 miles long, and I hiked three sections of this but still did not cover the whole trail. First, I went on the urban section through the city of Bend at Riverbend Park and Farewell Bend Parks. Being in an urban area, there are community parks, picnic shelters and lovely sculptures along the paved trail. The trail traverses on both sides of Deschutes river. The Mill District shopping area is right next to the trail. The path around the river is very easy, we see people recreating on the river (kayaking, tubing, fishing). The next section I covered was the half mile walk to the fabulous Benham Falls. Here the trail is wide open and the start of the trail is especially beautiful with a pedestrian bridge crossing which provides scenic views of the calm Deschutes River. Thirdly, I went on the section of the trail at Tumalo State Park. I enjoyed this section most because of the beautiful river and mountain scenery all along the way. This section of the trail is more rudimentary (dirt, rock). But one the best spots is at the steel bridge walk across a pile of boulders high above the river.

The one negative I noticed about this trail is that there are no mile markers along the trail. In spite of that, Deschutes River Trail is absolutely worth checking out.

Love this trail! The only issue is that there are so many stops to take pictures. It is a beautiful well maintained trail that gifts you with the view of the Deschutes river and rock formations.

It is a dusty trail and I wear my older hiking or tenna shoes when on this trail. Weekend summer months are VERY high traffic. My suggestion is spring or early fall. I visited this May and there was snow in the air.

Well marked and nice hike. It is clearly marked as one way for most of it (due to the pandemic) but of course people do not follow these directions and do not wear masks.

Mid-winter weekday hike on snow covered trail along the river, Trail Head No. 2.1, was peaceful, very few people or dogs and nice river views. Flat ground, relatively easy although is some places snow was icy or deep. Poles may be helpful.

We stayed at a hotel adjacent to the trail and went out for a peaceful walk at sunset. The paved trail follows along the banks of the Deschutes River, so the scenery is great. It's suitable for wheelchairs and strollers and passes through Riverbend Park and Farewell Bend Park where there is a playground and some picnic shelters. We easily walked about 2 miles, crossing bridges over the river to go down both sides. There were a lot of people out walking or jogging and we saw people fishing, kayaking and paddle-boarding on the river. Waterfowl were abundant and didn't seem bothered by the company. The Mill District shopping area is right next to the trail; it would make a fun date night to have dinner at one of the restaurants there and then take a walk along the river.

This is a wonderful walk along the river. Only went a short distance because it was quite cold. Will definitely return this summer for a longer walk.

Parts of trail are right at the edge of town. The river is beautiful. One drawback with location is parts near town can be pretty busy.
