I am a commercial photographer. Here are some hints.
Try to visit right after the road is cleared of snow, the is when the mountain is most majestic. Whenever you go, plan to shoot late afternoon when the sun lights the west face and gives it a warm glow. If you want a super shot, wear waterproof boots and bug repellant and walk out toward a lake a little for better-framed shot. Be respectful of the environment and don't leave foot postholes where you walk.

The most beautiful hike in the most beautiful spot. So many mosquitos, but if you keep moving (or come at a better time of year), then you'll be okay.

Very nice, scenic, easy hike around one of the closest of the Cascade Lakes from Bend. Fantastic views of South Sister and Mt Bachelor. Great place to canoe, kayak, or paddleboard if you can get out on the water.

Low rating because the water level was way down. Bet time to photograph is either a little way after sunrise or later in the afternoon.

Breathtaking mountain views ( South Sister, Broken Top, Mount Bachelor) from a shallow lake. We found a short “hike” more like a walk and we were glad we brought the paddle board for the experience of being on the water. The lake though is more of a swamp as it is very shallow, about a foot or two in some spots and doesn’t get deep. Rough road on the drive in as well but we made it, though not in a 4WD.

Stunning mountain views. Shallow water. Peaceful and calm. Could you want any more than that? This lake has it all. If you’re driving to the boat launch area, just be warned that the road is truly horrible!

The lake and surrounding area are beautiful indeed. However... this is THE MOST OVERCROWDED lake in Oregon! Literally 100's of people... in the middle of the week! Don't even try to go here on a weekend. No parking, boat ramp area is a massive clogged mess. Save time and kayak through downtown Chicago... you will see less people than at Sparks Lake.

Center lake shallow, gets deeper as you paddle south. We have secret camp tucked away. Been canoeing since 70’s, spent 5 anniversaries there. Few fish at south end. Kids filled canoe with salamanders. Crowded now a day—get there early. Has ramp but so many people can not use ramp—I now have row boat on trailer. Camping around lake may not be allowed—stay at Elk or Hosmer

Sparks lake est un lac au pied du Mont Bachelor et qui permet d'avoir de belles vues sur Broken Top and South Sister. L'eau y est limpide et d'un superbe bleu. Une occasion de faire une photo digne d'une carte postale

I read a thousand reviews before camping at Sparks last summer. I was organizing a camp trip for 15 people and since you can't reserve ahead I did alot of research to make sure it would work & I didnt make 15 people drive from Portland for nothing. We camped mid august during the Perseids meteor shower. It was less than breathtaking. Im sure its gorgeous earlier in the year, but I would not recommend in later summer. The water was so shallow I could barely kayak across and when you have to get out and drag your kayak back to shore you discover the one thing none of those thousand reviews mentioned. Leeches.

Excellent for both. Lots of paddle boarders and kayakers. The lake is shallow for its size. VERY crowded, especially on weekends. You'll have to park and walk a ways then.

Would it be way too cold to camp at the end of May? Also, I've read there are paddle-in campsites, but are there any you don't need to paddle to? Thanks!
Way to cold? No but it won't be hot either. You are in the Cascade Mountains at 5500 feet, It could snow, hail, rain or be sunny. Be prepared for most any type of weather and you should have a great time.
Does anyone know if the highway is still closed in March?

I do believe the highway this year will be closed at least to the end of March.
It is January 6 and there is about 10 feet with three more months of snow.
About four or five years ago it the road was closed until the beginning of May

Is there much snowfall at the lake near the end of November? Or will the lake be frozen by then do you think?

Cascade Lakes Highway is usually closed by the end of November.

No there isn't, but there maybe Elk Lake. However I am not sure how far of a drive that is from Sparks. Also as the other reviewer mentioned, Tumalo Creek Kyakas & Canoes.

Thanks for the great review. We will be in the area in about a week (Aug 6-12). We have heard the water level can get too low. Since you were just there, what are your thoughts? We are simply wanting to kayak and enjoy the beauty!

I don't think you will have a problem with a low water level. Snow still on all the peaks.

Fair water level, down a bit below normal. Waldo Lake is no problem.
