What a wonderful place; so many types of different and unique things to do and see. One day is not sufficient to see all the attractions. The Lava River Cave is a timed entry tour that takes some preplanning. The visit to Lava Butte requires a ticketed shuttle ride from the visitor center. Paulina Peak and Paulina Falls require some driving but are worth a visit. Benjamin Falls is another waterfall after a half mile beautiful hike along the Deschutes River. Do not miss the Molten Land paved trail near the Lava Lands visitor center.
Newberry National Volcanic Monument is an absolutely gorgeous place.

The Newberry Crater volcanic monument is very interesting. The visitor centre is a good 1st stop to learn about the history. The ranger was super friendly and very enthusiastic. Drive up to the top of the cone for fab views and walks.

The southern part of the national monument was well worth the extra drive from Bend. We loved our hike on the obsidian flow, though it required care. Appreciated the picnic tables there as well. Spent time on East Lake, a relaxing shoreline walk. The peak might have been interesting has there not been haze from the nearby fire, but we skipped it.

We only had time to visit lava lands visitor center area. We drove up to the top of the lava butte, walked the trail on the top. It was interesting to see the red crater.
We then drove to the visitor center, walked the trail behind it. It was lava field with paved trail, there were many plants with yellow flowers. It was very beautiful. We fully enjoyed the trail.

This park has two main areas - a series of sites clustered around the visitor center, and an area further afield around the Newberry Volcano and two adjoining lakes.
I only had time to hop off the highway and visit the area around the visitors center, which I suspect is what most people do. Having driven by the area plenty of times, I was glad I finally stopped in. Budget yourself 2 to 3 hours just for the sites around the visitors center; longer if you also want to see the Lava River Cave.
The main feature next to the visitors center is the volcanic butte. There's a shuttle that runs every 20 minutes or so and takes you up to the top of the butte. You'll be treated to a great view at the top (assuming it's a clear day - we had a clear day and could see the string of peaks all the way to Mt. Hood and Mt. Adams beyond), plus a short trail that loops around the rim of the cone. Removes the blinders for sure as to how many volcanoes there are around you in Oregon, and the destruction they can wrought.
Be sure to also hike the Trail of the Molten Land, which is a mile or so long loop, plus a spur in the middle that is a bit of a steep climb up to a viewpoint, but the entire trail is hard paved, so as long as you don't have any major mobility issues you'll be able to do it. It takes you through a barren land of volcanic rock and destruction that looks absolutely alien and is crazy to think after thousands of years little has been able to regrow here. You will be fully exposed to the sun out on the trail - so if it's a hot/bright day, plan accordingly.
Wasn't able to get to the Lava River Cave as that now requires timed tickets, so if you want to see that, you probably should budget a whole day in the area in case you show up in the morning and only afternoon tickets are available.
There's also a road that takes you down to the Benham Falls trailhead. If you're looking to hike or bike for a stretch this trail is probably a good option - it was wide, gravel paved, and fairly flat. But if you're gritting it, as we were, in hopes of seeing a waterfall, you'll be disappointed as it's not really a waterfall, its more a series of cascades and rapids, and there isn't much of a view of them either. Spend your time instead on the volcanic attractions around the visitors center.

What an eye-popping and incredibly educational experience! We didn't get to do the Lava Cave but we took the shuttle to Lava Butte summit and walked the Molten Fields, then we made the drive over to Paulina Peak (the drive up there is not for the faint of heart) but what amazing views everywhere! The power of volcanic activity in the Oregon area is unlike anything we've ever seen and it should not be missed. Its so otherworldly that the Apollo 15 astronauts trained here before going to the lunar surface.

People flock to the lava tunnel and that's definitely worth doing (sign up in advance with a new system that means you don't have to get there an hour before the gates open and cross your fingers). My only tip there is that the headlamps they rent are really, really good and way better than relying on your phone. The place I want to urge people to go is the obsidian hike at the end fo Paulina River Road; I saw a picture of it at the Visitor's Center and a ranger told me where to go. So different than anything I've ever seen and so worth it! Be warned that the surfaces are very uneven and the rocks are sharp, it's a bit of a hike up, first a set of stairs and then on the obsidian pile itself, and there's no shade. But oh my what views! And the obsidian itself is fascinating. I loved the interpretative signs and the volunteer at the bottom answering questions. Look at the pictures to get a sense of it.

This easy trail is full of interesting geological history and amazing views. Great for hiking with kids. Staff was friendly and educational. Much paved pathway that is stroller and wheelchair friendly.

The obsidian hike at the end of Paulina River Rd is worth it. Nice interpretive trail through a very unique landscape. Takes about an hour to hike around the trail.

My husband and I are planning on visiting Oregon this coming summer - I just read a review that the visitor center for this park and the ability to get to the top was closed due to Covid19 in August, anyone know if it will be open this coming summer?? Just curious! Thanks!

It was open to hike in Sept 2020. The visitor center was closed but all else open. Probably will be open in 2021.

Yes it's part of the National Forest. The day-use is $5 per vehicle, or display a National Park Pass or Northwest Forest Pass. Passes are available at the Lava Lands Visitor Center (currently closed). Check to make sure the sites are open before you go; some are only open in summer, and some may be closed due to Covid-19.

Sorry, I didn't see this until 3 months too late for you. I hope you found the well marked car exit to Paulina Falls. The other falls that are gorgeous, though smaller, are found about 2 miles hiking in, starting from McKay Campground onto the Peter Skene Ogden'sTrail.

Good review Jerry. Did you happen to notice how much longer the visitor center and shuttle will be open? I am planning a trip there last week of Oct. The National Forest Service website is temporarily disabled. Thanks, Deidre

Is this open of February 27 - March 3?
You've gotten accurate answers. I will add that the road to Paulina Peak is closed even after the rest of the place opens. It all depends on the snowfall the previous year. This year's snowfall is been very heavy, so if you want to go to that area I suggest advance inquiries.

We'll be passing through in about a week, and just found this amazing area. I think we'll be able to spend about 4 hours or so and still get to our end of day destination. What hikes/walks would you recommend? and, how are the mosquitoes this time of year? Thanks!

You can see a lot right off of Hwy 97 at the Lava Butte exit. Lava Butte has an easy path through lava fields, preserved trees and spectacular Cascade views. There's also a great paved bike path to a river trail and paved road to the same trailhead. And the lava caves are at the same exit. You could easily pack it all into 4 hours because there is so much at that one exit.

I agree that the Lava Lands Visitor Center would give you a lot of information about the area if time is limited. At the same location (on the way back to Highway 97) you can go through the Lava River Cave. They have lanterns to rent as there are no lights inside. It takes around an hour and fifteen minutes to go to the end and back. It is cold when you get to the deepest part so bring a jacket. Dogs are not allowed in the cave and the floor is uneven.
