We took our annual trip to view the blooming Skunk Cabbage. It's 2 hour loop hike, 2.5 miles, on the Hidden Creek Trail to the Tunnel Trail out to the Railroad Pilings, then back on the Railroad Trail to the paved road. Then up the paved road to the Hidden Creek Trail back to the trailhead.
The Skunk Cabbage (also called swamp lanterns) are growing alongside the Hidden Creek Boardwalk. We even saw a newt crawling though the mud. The Interpretive Center was closed today, but the restrooms were open.

We visited South Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve during the first week of Aug. 2021. It's approximately a 30 min. drive from the town of Bandon, with much of the drive (8.5 miles) on winding W. Beaver Hill Road (a left turn from Highway 101 northbound direction).
Stop at the visitor's center and pick up a trail map (center was closed at time of our visit). If hiking on Hidden Creek Trail, drive further down the access road to the parking area near that trailhead. The heavily shaded Hidden Creek Trail takes one through a verdant Pacific NW forest with Douglas Fir, Cedar and hemlock, some of which look like old growth. The understory is thick with beautiful ferns, skunk cabbage, rhododendram and other shrubs (think "Jurassic Park"). One eventually emerges from the forest canopy to the sunlit marsh environs and South Slough. We chose the shorter (0.75 mi. each way) Hidden Creek Trail to the slough and returned via the Big Cedar Trail and access road to the Visitor's Center (short walk back to our cars). Next time we hope to spend more time at the Slough itself, exploring the Tunnel Trail and marsh trails in the morning hours and doing some birdwatching at the slough. And, for those with dogs, dogs are allowed on leash.

We visited the last day of February and the skunk cabbage flowers were just starting to emerge. It's always a great hike on the Hidden Creek trail to finally get to the boardwalk where the skunk cabbage are. They'll continue blooming into April.

Entre marée haute et marée basse, des pontons permettent de se promener dans la nature et de découvrir la faune et la flore qui vivent dans ces milieux particuliers.
Le visitor center est très riche et permet de voir de nombreux animaux, des livres et des panneaux d'information. Un joli moment de promenade et de calme tout en s'instruisant.

I was excited to come here by the reviews and I wasn’t disappointed. I went with my husband and kids (7 and 3 years old). The interpretive center was closed (It is closed on Mondays) but the trail was open. We drove down to the Trailhead and followed the signs for the Hidden River. It took us through three ecosystems and to the estuary viewing platform. I loved the walking platforms. They are charming in their design. Not just in a straight line but meander in a lovely Oregonian fashion. To the observation deck and back took us an hour. It’s probably more filled with animals in Spring or Summer but still a lovely walk in winter.

The property covers such a diverse landscape and the trail is so well placed, you'll be thrilled at each change in landscape and water as you hike along.
Be sure to pick up a trail map at the visitor center and plan your walk. If you don't want to do the entire loop, do the Sloughside Trail - walk to the point and enjoy the beautiful water viewpoints and on the way back, the trail becomes a boardwalk over Hidden Creek Marsh. So stunning is this piece of nature.

Not that much of interest in the interpretive center and you really can't see any wildlife, but there was some nice hiking through the woods, easy to moderate. Glad we made the stop.
