This is a great spot for a family outing. There are several trails to hike around, and it is easy to get to. There isn't much shade, so on a warm day it's best to go earlier in the day and bring a hat.

Baskett Slough (pronounced "slew") is a lovely place to park and walk, or just view the amazing number of wild birds that make this spot their home.

This National wildlife reserve features a beautiful hike through oak savanna and woodland, the endangered Fender’s blue butterfly, lots of birds, views of the nearby wineries, including Andante Vineyard, Van Duzer Vineyard.

We visit it almost every weekend. A great place to see a variety of waterfowl right from your vehicle. It depends on the season as to what and the numbers you will see. Mid to late summer probably is the least desirably time to visit. In addition to the waterfowl, the hiking trails offer a nice visit to a nice oak covered hill area with land birds and possible small animals and deer.

Most people only stop at the viewing center at the top of the hill on hwy 22, and while you can see the landscape, its the trails which aren't accessible from the over look that let you get up close and personal with the birds and butterflies. Be aware that dogs are forbidden in this refuge and some of the roads/trails will have trucks sharing the space. There are no restrooms available.

We drove by it this morning at about 5 AM. There was low lying fog. Such a beautiful sight. It's very close to Salem OR and an easy stop on the way to the Oregon Coast.

This is a free place to go and enjoy the bird watching, and learn about the local area. It offers beautiful view of the local area and bird watching and is a protected wildlife preserve. It is located on Hwy 22 just past Hwy 99. It is a beautiful location for a rest stop and to learn more about the area. A good family stop to get more aquatinted with the wildlife and scenic area.

Thia is a large area with a gravel road going down the middle. Two large lake/marsh areas. We have seen thousands of Canadain Geese (three different varieties), Red Wing Blackbirds, Golden Headed Blackbirds, Great Blue Herons, White Pelicans, Brown Pelicans, Bald Eagles, Golden Eagles, Red Tail Hawks, Perigone Falcons, White Egrets, Coots, and more ducks than I can count. There are hiking trails were we have seen deer and coyotes.

Baskett Slough preserves a local wetland with diverse migratory wildfowl and raptors. The easy loop trail climbs several hundred feet up to overlooks with great views of the wetlands, inland valleys, and coast range. Even after a hotspell that dried up much of the slough, we saw lots of birds, and another hiker saw a bald eagle. Also a good place for observing invertebrates and wildflowers. A bonus was extensive beds of ripe, sweet, amazing blackberries (and also plenty of poison oak). Access by well graded dirt roads. Great family activity, easy enough for many kids and older adults. Bring water.

I decided to hike this by myself one evening and was surprised at how long the loop was that connected with Smithfield Road. My GPS said I hiked about 6.5 miles in about 1.5 hours, which will tell you just how easy of a hike it was. There were a couple small hills, but nothing too harsh. Most of the trail is exposed, so bring a hat and wear sunscreen if walking in the summer months. Views of the lake and the wildlife surrounding made me forget I was relatively close to a busy highway.
