I go to Dexter Lake Club to eat smoked brisket, play music and listen to music. It is exactly like it was in the movie Animal House. It can get loud in this little roadhouse. And yes, they have bungalows in the back, just like in the Doors song.
And then they have the lake out front, which has hosted the Pac 12 rowing championships for the last two years. There's an oar from one of the racing shells hanging from the ceiling.

Surprisingly, Dexter Lake Club kept live music going through last summer's forest fire smoke, winter weather and Covid. They have set up a little stage outside in back.
The smokers that DLQ uses are impressive made-in-Texas units. Dry smoke brisket, chicken and pork ribs are excellent. The variety of sauces they offer is extraordinary. Go for Taco Tuesday.

Had some business nearby and a long drive home to look forward to. Stopped in for a beer and to check out an Animal House film site (some Otis Day and the Knights memorabilia is on display). Don't be fooled by the sort of hole-in-the-wall appearance. The place isn't fancy, by any means, but cozy and down-to-earth with friendly staff. Figured we'd try the BBQ since it was right there. The menu seemed short until we started thinking about all of our options. We settled on pulled chicken (moist and tasty) and brisket (smoky and tender) and tried at least 6 of the 8 to 10 house-made sauces. The whole array (with sides and bread) came on a cookie sheet which seemed odd but makes sense when you think about it. There is a reason they sell out many days. Anyway, the great food made the long ride home much more bearable.

Super friendly staff. Excellent food, which is surprising for the great prices. Projector is great for sports. The live bands are extremely talented.

I eat here all the time and my only complaints are
(1) In the spring summer and fall they will sell out of 1/2 of their menu by 6pm (baby backs go first and fast). Which speaks volumes about the quality of the food.
(2) The weekend breakfasts are HUGE and the Hollandaise is real ... but for some reason they just don't understand toast.
Too many things on the plus sideb ...great food, extremely nice owners who work there tirelessly 6-7 days a week, a great bar on 1 half of the place with a big back yard area where they will put a band on some weekends during the summer. Testament to the personality of the place with a nod towards the clubs storied history they routinely bring in some incredible entertainment like Oregon;s funniest comic (and co.) on a packed comedy night. The annual luao next month in May and the big Toga Party in June... During these events this place hops!
One last gripe... They have karaoke 2 nights a week (I think its 2) and out in Dexter Oregon where the biggest town within 10-15 mile is Lowell OR population 100 karaoke night draws a really good crowd. I happened to be there eating dinner this week and thought I would check out their book of available music and sing one and there are no books and in fact I only stayed for about an hour but there also doesn't appear to be anyway to put your name in the hat to get in line to sing. The guy running things would spot someone he knew in the bat and say "Hey Linda (or whoever) would you like to sing one?" followed by "Hey Tom did you want to sing that new one you've been working on?" making everyone who he didnt know feel like chopped liver

Went there out of Nostalgia for the "Animal House" road trip. There were a few nice photos. Liked the pulled pork and flank steak. Give the chicken a miss. bare tables and chairs. OK beer selection.

Went here for lunch. Great burgers and fries for $10 a person pretty much. The lake is in view and the outdoor area is nice to eat and enjoy the view

I stopped in there with my two sons and their friend, whom were very hungry. One of which is a cook, the other is in the military and I am professional cook with a culinary degree. Hence, the boys were so hungry that they did not want to wait for me to cook at home. We had been out playing disk golf all afternoon, we were all hot, tired and hungry.
My boys ordered the curried chicken soup and the rice was very crunchy (under cooked). My kids hate it when I complain, so I bit my lip on that one hoping the burgers would be outstanding. Then our burgers came out. The patty on my was so overcooked it was concave and dry from their flat top. My son's burger was the 'Otis'. He took two bites out of his and gave up. The other two were hungry and ate everything.
I did mention this to the waitress when we were about to leave, but I really didn't want to cause a problem. Just wanted to pay and leave. Then the owner came and was concerned that about the food quality, which I would be as well. I wasn't looking to get a free meal. I told them I just thought they should know, but the owner acted like the complaint was bogus and bragged about what a great cook he had back in his kitchen. They took the cost of the 'Otis' off the price. Again, I didn't ask for that. I did mention that the quality of the food was not proportionate to the price we were paying.
It just ended up being an uncomfortable situation and we will not be back, nor will I recommend it. I don't think they will suffer since people go out of their way to visit this place. Probably stick to their specials if you find yourself having to stop their for body fuel.
The 'Black and Blue' burger at Springfield's Hop Valley Brewery, is the real deal and of course it all depends on who is in the back putting the love into the food.
This day was not a 'love in the food' day for the Dexter Lake Club.
I'm not a food snob, but the burger has to be juicy and flavorful. Not a piece of cardboard for $12.
This place has potential, but in my humble opinion menu was way too large for a little place like that. Keep it small and simple, but high quality and consistency!

We are sorry that your experience with us was not in line with the majority. I am the owner who came to your table and was genuinely concerned about the food quality. I would never just automatically assume that a customer's concerns are bogus, with or without a chef's card. I was thinking out loud when I stated that our cook was very good, (meaning reputation-wise). That said, any chef, being human, can have an off order. After you left, we did inspect your leftovers and thought that the burgers may have indeed been over cooked. It was a gesture to take a meal off of your ticket but we are mostly sorry that you had a poor experience with us at all,and corrective measures have already been taken in house. My wife and I work countless hours weekly and do our best to have our people put out a top notch product.

They have recently changed their menu, and NOT for the better. They messed up on four of our orders. The so called Strawberry Lemonade had no strawberries. They refilled our drinks without asking then charged for every refill. The employees were very rude. I'm very disappointed. This used to be one of my favorite restaurants.

Our breakfast was cold when served, but that was the least of the problems. The pancakes were burnt and we had to remind the waitress twice for butter and syrup; when it finally came, even the syrup was cold, and the butter sat on top of the pancakes like a lump of fat. The kitchen staff was arguing in the kitchen so loud, you could hear them in the dining room. The sausage gravy tastes like curdled milk... too many problems to list here, really. Thought the small town mentality might be overcome by the new owners, but the wait staff was unprofessional and the food was mediocre at best. It wasn't cheap either--nearly $15 for a cup of coffee, inedible cold biscuits and gravy and rubbery, cold eggs--such a disappointment.
