No Maps or Guidance
We found ourselves in the middle of a large herd 20 years ago.. this year we spent about 7 hours over 2 days and all we saw were 2 stallions and a flock of quail... totally understand that the horses are not waiting for us to arrive but there is absolutely no messaging or indication as to where you are or what is ahead and the road is absolutely 4x4 all the way...

Steens Mtn Guest Ranch
Rode out on horses from the Steens Mtn Guest Ranch to see the Kiger mustangs. We were very fortunate in finding multiple herds and getting close to the allowable limit. Guides recognized some of the mustangs and told stories about them

Amazingly beautiful horses!

This was a wonderful drive we took in a 4x4 Jeep Wrangler. It was raining and we did have muddy roads.

We were at the right place at the right time in several instances to see the horses! We recommend taking the backroads available into this area. Be mindful that these are wild horses and give them the respect and the space they need.

We will go back in a heartbeat! BTW, we do have our own horses...seeing a horse to us is not a big deal. Seeing wild horses IS a big deal.

Hard to get there
2015年6月 • 夫妻情侣
Most unfortunately, didn't get to see this attraction. I was driving my Prius which has a very low ground clearance. I was told that the road was rather rough and I would be well advised to be driving a Jeep or a Pickup truck. Keep this in mind when planning your own trip. If I get to Diamond again, I will rent a Jeep.

Beautiful views

Like all animal refuges you have to be at the right place at the right time, unfortunately we did not see any mustangs while there but the views are spectacular. It was told to us that people had seen the herd the day before we were there. It is an 11 mile drive out to the viewing area and 11 miles back down the same road. The road is VERY rough so do not attempt it in a normal car or if it has rained recently. You need a truck or a vehicle that has some clearance. We were not sure if we were headed in the right direction so we stopped at the diamond hotel and they were very nice and helpful. The roads are not marked well. Coming from Diamond the road turns into a dirt road just past the hotel, follow the road (keep right at the intersection of 408) you will come to a sign for the kiger viewing area and turn right there. The road will not be bad the first 5 or so miles but gets increasingly rougher as you go along. At one point there was a fallen tree in the road and you have to go off the road to get around it (very rough) in fact coming back we had to use the 4 wheel drive. You will see where others have done this. Hopefully they will soon get that taken care of. My advice is unless you really love horses or back country super rough roads I would not go. At the top there is a trail you can follow with a beautiful 360 view of the mountains and surrounding country side but it took us an hour to drive there and back. That's an hour to drive a total of 22 miles. Also keep an eye out for rattlesnakes. P.S. There are no bathroom facilities, plan accordingly.
