Spring would be the time to visit this. I had been there before and it was better early in the year,

This is the most diverse lava field in the states. We had a pamphlet that helped us with what we were looking at. We saw a Maar, cinder cones and lots of basalt. The loop road is good gravel. Do recommend the pamphlet.

I would have rated this higher but for the lack of signage. We knew what main road we needed to take but from there it was extremely hard to find because there is literally no signage. Eventually we did find it quite be accident and wandered around for awhile. What we saw was very interesting but we had the feeling we were probably missing much more of the area.

These lava craters, cracks, and sunken tubes are really neat and very visible from your vehicle. Give them a try.

My wife and I visited here on 9/11/19. Part of auto tour for Refuge. 4.5m dead end road leads to calderas. Having visited active and in-active volcanoes in US and Hawaii it was amazing to me that Oregon had some much volcanic activity. Gravel road but OK for street tires on standard vehicle.

I printed out the park pamphlet before going, I would not have appreciated the site as much without it. Wish I had a more rugged vehicle so I could have gone to some of the other features.

Without the paper guide to the area, this tour is absolutely pointless. As of August 2019, the paper guides are available at a turnout/kiosk about 1/4 of a mile SW of the main entrance to the Diamond Craters area, on the opposite side of the highway. The guide is also available online, but it's just a pdf of the paper guide, which would make it difficult to use on anything other than a device with a very large screen.
But even with the guide, the tour is a challenge. There is little to no helpful signage on the route.
The tour is also described as a loop, but it is not. The Diamond Craters tour is embedded within the "Diamond Loop". Most of the crater tour is on an out and back, dead end, very rough gravel road. I didn't take my my 4 dour hatchback on it -- it would have been very slow going and I didn't want to risk the health of my vehicle. So I only saw 40% of the tour.
The guide is not intuitive, although it has a lot of good information. The mileage numbers for each feature are not cumulative, but refer to distance from the prior feature. Really, to use the guide effectively, it takes about 5-10 minutes of reading first. the guide also includes few pictures of the features on the tour, which makes it difficult to find the features on the landscape, especially because most features have no signs on the side of the road (the two I did see were like the skinny reflective plastic stakes that appear every 50-100 yards on the sides of roads -- so very easy to miss). The guide includes many long paragraphs that describe the features, but a few simple pictures could eliminate most of the text and help the visitor tremendously. I was usually not certain that what I was looking at was the feature of interest.
All in all, had more thought been put into producing the guide and making signs on the route, this could be a great tour, if your vehicle was up to the rough road. All of this could have been done for little money (a simplified guide would probably have cost less).
Also, vegetation and water cover many of the features here. Some imagination is required to appreciate the features. In the region, I recommend the Newberry National Volcanic Monument and Craters of the Moon National Monument as better sites to see many of the same and other features without vegetation (and far better guides and signs!).

We both have lived in Oregon all our lives...with only 20 out of 60 our years on the west side. We both grew up east of the Cascades. This is the first time we had ever seen this place.
Very cool. Follow the road and KNOW you should go in a 4x4. We were in our Jeep Wrangler that we pull behind the motorhome. The road is not improved, nor should you even think it should be. Wilderness people! Be prepared when you go. Take water, make sure you know how to change a flat. We did have cell service (Verizon) which surprised us! We don't get that good of service in our home area!
We had a great time and took in a lot of scenery. Plan on spending a few hours exploring. It was COLD when we were there and we did not see snakes, but we suggest you watch yourself, kids and dogs!

I followed the auto tour signs. I have a 4WD and don't mind some gravel road, but opted not to go the whole way to the end. It's rough and I was by myself, so decided that I should use common sense and be a bit cautious. There were absolutely no other humans around.
The surrounding area is stark and beautiful in its own way. The rock formations all around are interesting.

A very interesting tour of some unique geologic features. Every type of lava is represented here. The road is very "washboardy" so it's no suitable for motorhomes or cars that won't hold up to a lot of bumps and vibration. Some light walking is required, with more rigorous trails available.
