We saw many elk moose deer and turkeys. It takes a while and most of trip is on travel road but it is a fantastic drive

Zumwalt is an easy drive from Joseph. All but the last mile on well graded gravel roads. Vast vistas from the 33000 acres of grasslands. Nature Conservancy and local ranchers keep this pristine spot accessable

This is one of the natural beauties that is amazing when you consider all of the history in the area. I will say- if you are expecting to be “entertained” by more than the gorgeous landscape and occasional cow, don’t addd this to your iten. At times, the map and signs were somewhat confusing about which roads we were allowed to travel and which were not permitted. Overall, it was a nice afternoon drive.

Excellent gravel road. Very low risk to tires. Saw three vehicles on entire four hour drive. Remote, beautiful.

We visited the Zumwalt Prairie on June 15, 2019. A beautiful drive but long and the type of gravel road is said to be hard on car tires. We encountered a couple changing a tire, and, as we were driving a rental car, it made us a little concerned. We drove out 20 miles and walked Patti's Trail, which is a narrow footpath across the Prairie. Wildflowers were in bloom, beautiful, although wildflowers by nature are not real dramatic. Saw a beautiful herd of cattle there. Saw one elk on our drive out. The return trip was even better as we were facing the snow capped mountain range. Later found out we missed the best viewing which was 20 miles further out. But, with the concern not to get a flat tire, probably best. The tire store in Enterprise said almost all their business comes from trips out that road. All the same, we wouldn't have missed it and it was one of the highlights of our trip to Idaho.

Very special environment of high grass prairie. The wildflowers were beautiful on our hike on Patti's trail. There are three other hikes-people are allowed in certain areas. We got wonderful information for our 3-4 hour adventure from the Enterprise office of the Nature Conservancy.

This is a window into the past, before most of the high desert prairie was converted to pasture and farmland. The roads are rough, but there is next to no traffic. Get gas before you head out there. There is wildlife around, but you have to look for it. Lots of raptors and other birds abound. Take your time and explore a unique part of Oregon's beautiful Eastern high country.

Definitely worth the drive. There were hardly any other people on the way up there and it was perfectly serene and beautiful at the top. My favorite part of our trip!

Well worth visiting. One of the only true native prairies left in the northwest. Beautiful wildflowers, wide open spaces, and the occasional wolf. Gorgeous! Go see the Zumwalt, but please respect this place. It's very special.

Although we enjoyed the history and information available about the Zumwalt Prairie, we were there in August after most of the wildflowers were done blooming. We would recommend going in June. If you are in the area in August, there are still abundant wildflowers in higher elevations like around the Hat Point Lookout.

What is the average temp in mid June? That is about the only time we can go. Do think you flowers will still be in bloom?

I was there June 7th, 2014. It was warm and pleasant. There were still plenty of wildflowers and the grasses were green. Truly spectacular.
