McKenzie River National Recreation Trail is one of my favorite hikes. It is a great easy hike for families. This past week I started thursday early morning (6:30 am) at Paradise Campground. What is different now from past hikes are the number of bikers.
All bikers were polite and shred the trail. I noticed no litter on the trail. The trail seems to have escaped the fires, wind storms and weather hazards.
The trail follows the Mc Kenzie River and you will find lots of camera opportunities. Rafters are frequent and love to be shouted at and waved to.

Great hiking trail for all skill levels. Families would do well on this trail. I loved that the trail is close to the river, wide, and very little poison oak or mosquitos.
Be sure allow lots of time and take a camera.
My suggestion would be to go during a weekday if possible. The trail can get pretty busy during the weekends. A September hiking area after summer campers have left would be idea. If you don't mind crowds then combine your hike with a camping experience.

The McKenzie river is known for it's clear cool water and excellent fishing and rafting. Also great hiking and biking trails. There are awesome waterfalls with deep blue colors like you have never seen before. The is also Belknap hot springs where you can soak in the waters or even rent a room or cabin for a night or two. Lots of beautiful scenery And if you stop at Belknap be sure to check out the secret garden across the bridge !

This was my favorite hike we did on our trip! The Waterfall loop connects with the McKenzie River Trail making about a 2.5 mile hike that borders the river on both sides and gives multiple viewpoints for the waterfalls. The hike was not too strenuous and provides a peaceful walk through the lush forest. The river water was a stunning gray-blue. Just gorgeous!

Type the name into Google maps or Waze and it shows you exactly were to go 😉
There are toilets at the Trailhead.
In order to avoid the crowd, I've started my hike round 3pm... Worked like a charm. I am not an early bird.
The hike starts somewhat on paved ground, then it's a bit more rocky. Even if u aim to get wet, wear proper hiking boots.
It's an easy hike, but still totals almost 4 miles, so you'll need drinking water.
Most of the hike is through the forest, so there's shade and no mosquitoes 👍👍
You can get wet before you get to the pool itself. The river has some access points.
The trail is fun, the views are beautiful and the end is rewarding.
On the main road exiting left, there are 2 more waterfalls that are worth a pic and a look.

This is a 26-mile trial through a beautiful rain forest with a lovely river and waterfalls. We hiked a popular one-mile section between 2 waterfalls. Just an absolutely stunning walk.

The falls were breathtaking. The trail was comfortable. I went down one side and around up the other. Stop frequently to take in the view. I am a 75 yr old woman so walking sticks help make it easy.

There are different sections of the McKenzie, from easy class I - II, with a couple of sections with class III rapids. You can tailor your trip accordingly. We taught our grandkids how to read water, row a raft on this river.

Rhododendrons abound, peaceful & serene. Immense fir trees surrounding the falls...a painter’s inspired dream! The drive was wonderful from Eugene, twisting roads with huge trees on either sides.

Yes, you have access to the river all along it except for when it flows underneath the lava. The river mostly moves fast in here and I have never fished along this route, but I imagine you could find a hole to try.

I'm planning to visit trail in 2 weeks. Could anyone give me recommendation on where I should stay? How is cell phone signal reception over there? Any food I need bring? Thanks.

Cell phone signal in the non mountain areas is fine. When you are in the mountains it very sporadic. It is starting to cool off now, so bring warm clothes as well. Depending on where you are there may or may not have food. Also, there are plenty of places to camp.

Best I can tell, it is a 3.9MI out & back hike. It is relatively flat though. We were mountain biking in one direction only, so I went from the falls to the pool, then past.

Hello. I saw your review on trip advisor. I would like to know from a local, the best route to get to these falls. What road to get there, were to park, etc. How is the hike to the falls? Easy, very difficult, etc. Any help would be appreciate. I do have children that will be hiking as well. We are staying in springfield. Thank you

I live in Eugene. We just take the beautiful McKenzie Highway out of Springfield until you get to Sahalie Falls. The parking lot is not very big so it might be crowded on the weekend. Shale Falls is just a short walk from the parking lot.
The better parking lot is at Koosah Falls, just downstream from Sahalie. They have a better bathroom as well. You can hike between the falls and all along the trail above and below the falls. It's a gorgeous hike with plenty of stairs. This is a dirt trail - not paved, but it's very natural. Good luck.
