O.k., not here to trash the man in charge as he was quite knowledgeable, however if you have been to other Planetariums as I have you will find this one very, very small. It was surprisingly small when I walked in and then saw just normal attached chairs. It is an hour long show, however all he did was show slides on the ceiling and talk. I did not attend just to see a slide show. In fact only the last 10 minutes were used to actually turn on the Planetarium and see the stars, planets and sky. In fact he had to be reminded to turn off the house lights. The chairs are not conducive at all to looking up and your neck will feel it. It only cost $5.00 which is quite reasonable, but the experience was not at all like I expected. Too small, shows slides, uncomfortable chairs so make sure you don't mind this, and make sure you see a show that will require more than just slides. I would suggest seeing a show that is on a subject of great interest to you other than just a casual night out. If you want to go to a Planetarium show find larger ones to visit, that offer the usual seating where you can tilt your head back with a cushion as other Planetariums that I have been too offer.

Mount Hood Community College has a planetarium that puts on star shows and lectures open to the public. It is a great facility but it seems to be under-utilized based on the number of the attendees during their public events. It is excellent and a huge plus for this community college and anyone interested in astronomy. You won't be disappointed and you will definitely learn somethings if you visit this little gem.

Take a journey into outer space and see all the heavenly bodies. You will enjoy the view from the indoor comfort of the planetarium.

I found out that Mt. Hood Community College has a planetarium. The shows cost only $5 and are shown on the first Tuesday of the Month and also a shows on a Friday evening as well. The show lasts about an hour. and was at 6 PM and 7:15 PM tonight. So I went to the earlier one at 6 PM. about a dozen and a half people turned up. And i hear that more tend to show at the later show at 7:15 PM as more people are off from work then. So going to the early show does have the advantage of less people.
I walked down the main stairs and turned left. that is where the Planetarium was. you enter and do down into the planetarium room. There are a bout 6 rows of seats facing the front of the room. The back rows are the best places to sit. Easier on your neck since you are looking up at the dome like ceiling where the stars are projected. And the informative displays are aimed at the lower front section.
The speaker was the Astronomy instructor who mentioned the upcoming solar eclipse that will happen here August 21st. Portland is not a place for total totality. That will be more to the south of us. He suggested that you plan ahead as so many people will be coming here to see this event. perhaps twice the population of Portland and we already can't deal with the traffic we have as it is. Imagine what doubling or tripling the number of people around here would do to traffic.
He told us that if we signed up for his summer course we could take advantage of their field trip south during the eclipse. They have a site they will be going to to view it. Now there is an interesting tip if you wanted to learn more about the night sky and see the eclipse from a better vantage point.
The show tonight was interesting. It was like a lecture with details displayed up above with the rest of the dome displaying the night sky moving. Some basics about the history of astronomy were touched upon and various stars defined. All very interesting to watch and listen to.
At the end we where show an little show he had put together that was set to music and was very cool to watch. Starting off with a spinning globe and pulling back from it to see space and starts rushing as if you where racing through space.
I plan to check out the next show about the Solar Eclipse. Will be nice to learn a bit more about this event happening here in August. I am thinking that this might be a nice thing to do each month now that I have seen what it is like and quite enjoyed the whole presentation.

The room could definitely use some updating. We had a little difficulty finding the planetarium so we didn't have ideal seats but they were falling apart. The presentation was very interesting.

Sit under the stars in the planetarium as the speaker describes the different stars and planets. I have gone there since I was a kid.

MHCC Planetarium is run by very knowledgeable and fun people. It is smaller than some which makes it more enjoyable.

This is a great way to spend an evening, especially during the dark, rainy evenings of winter. We've gone several times. The program is entertaining, you learn a lot, and the price can't be beat. It's especially cool with the new projector.
