If you think that this is gonna be your average run-of-the-mill wine tasting, you're gonna be so surprised. John, the vintner will over-deliver. This is a History/Agricultural/Chemistry/Life Lesson/Sensory experience. Other wine tastings will never compare to this 2.5-hour crash course of a tour. Enjoy!

Is it not almost 2022? Imagine my shock when I called (today for a future reservation) with a groupon deal only to be told "call me back in 5 min, I have another call on the line" Excuse me, I am trying to help your business and figure out if I should be a member. I give the guy the benefit of a doubt and I call him in 7 min and no matter what i said was 'no"...SO i cancelled my groupon deal...AND mind you, I belong to several wine club as a member in CA (napa and sonoma), several in OR and several in WA (walla walla and woodinville). Too bad, you just lost a very potential customer.....

My son took me here for my birthday. When we arrived, a friendly dog greeted us and led us to the tasting room, which was really more like an old-time kitchen. In fact, we were told the building was one of the old Sears do-it-yourself houses. The varietals were quite limited, consisting of riesling, chard, and pinot, though the tasting included several consecutive years of the pinot, which they termed a "vertical tasting." All of the wines were dry and the different vintages of pinot were quite different depending on the weather of their respective years. The tasting fees, of course, applied toward purchase of the wines.

This was our first stop - and our favorite - along the Tualitin wine trail. The tasting room inside a quaint farmhouse is casual and charming; the greeters are three lovely canines. John, the owner, was the host for our tasting. He shared a bit of interesting information about the wines and how different weather conditions from year to year affect the grapes. To illustrate he had samplings of the same type of wine from different years. We especially liked the 2015 Pinot Noir, the Merlot Rose and the Pinot Gris which we got “en boutillere” in charming bottle. We really enjoyed our visit and the wines.

Every winery should have a nice dog. This one has two. The two ladies serving when my wife and I visited were friendly and had enough knowledge to make it informative.
Some might prefer a more swanky setting. This place is not that, but it works really well. The older house is welcoming and charming.
The wine (from two amateur wine lovers) was really quiet good. My wife isn't a big red wine person, but the Pinot Noirs here and at another winery may have converted her.

We visited for the first time yesterday. It was an ambient drive down a winding suburban country road around hillsides and by golden fields recently mowed for hay and other crops. When we reached the two story farmhouse, we were immediately met and welcomed by staff and dogs. We were given a glass of Chardonnay to sip while we waited for our host, owner and winemaker John Platt. He has much knowledge of the geological history of the hillside, the science of winemaking and art of blending the flavor of wine and cuisine. His knowledge comes through education and hands on experience over 25 years, plus or minus. Once everyone in our tasting party was together, we climbed into a minivan for a brief drive to the winery. It is a large building dug into a hillside, so the inside is kept at a fairly stable temperature year round. On this 90 degree day, it was very refreshing. There we learned about the soils, growing, grape picking and fermenting of the wines, such as why some wines will have a stronger fruity flavor than others. We also learned there is sometimes competition between elk and winemaker over how the land will be used. Elk rule over one hillside while winemaker gets the other. Back at the farmhouse, we tasted 6 different wines. In the end, we purchased two boutilles of the Pinot Gris to take home, and our guests bought two bottles of 2009 and two of the 2014 Pinot noir.
Helvetia Winery is family run and unpretentious. We enjoyed our afternoon there immensely and hope to go back again.

Initially, I was turned on to this place due to a living social deal. The deal and some of the pictures that I had seen made this place seem quite large and somewhat upscale. Upon my arrival, I was relieved and somewhat saddened that it wasn't as upscale or as large as I initially anticipated. Nevertheless, the time I was there was great. The decently sized house that the winery is run out of is really homey. It was really comfortable, I kind of felt like part of the family. The tour and the tour guide(John) were just as pleasant. His knowledge of wines and their process and his demeanor were absolutely superb. This place definitely lends itself to be a hidden gem.

We were doing a tour of local wineries as part of a fund raiser for the Humane Society and this was our first stop. It was a special day where you could bring your dog and they had activities for them too. It was so peaceful and they had a lovely porch and amazing Pinot Noir.

We happened upon this place while driving through the area (you must go to the peach farm in the area also).
The people who run the place are down to earth (which helps when growing grapes;)
They know their wines - the best thing was that it was such a small place- we felt that we were driving up to a neighbor's house.
I cannot compare it to other wineries but if you want a homey feel, with especially friendly people you can't go wrong by going here.
