The hike was quite rocky at some points - difficult for my dog but she was still able to do it and loved it. (I think most dogs in good shape could do it). Also most people in decent shape. We are in pretty good shape but don't hike very often so this hike was challenging but doable. We took snacks, water, and breaks. The views were absolutely amazing.

absolutely loved this hike, it starts off with a long bumpy road up to a lodge then you start from a trail head that goes a few different directions. The Cooper spur trail takes you up as high as you can go with amazing views of the summit. I highly recommend this hike.

Nice hiking, not as difficult, more moderate not hard. Went all the way to Cooper spur, took about 3-4 hours hike. Nice view of Mount St. Helen, Mount Rainier and Mount Adam and the Mount sisters.

It was a warm clear day. We had a great view of the surronding mountains. Started on Eliot trail, finished that one and walked to Cooper Spur trail to continue. It was Wednesday, so we met just few people. We made it to the end, great views of the glacier since you are at the same altitude. Great hike! Took us 6 hours with many breaks for pictures and views.

We found this hike on nwhiker dot com, very nice descriptions of how to get here and the hike are there. We had a rental car, thankfully we were upgraded because I don't think a little 4 cyl economy car would have fared well up the forest road to the trail head. There were many ruts and washouts in the road which made driving a bit harrowing. The landscape while driving up is fascinating, through burned forest with new growth emerging. The hike itself is fantastic. Great variety of landscapes and terrains. The last mile or so is the real challenge, very steep switchbacks in ash and rock. Footing is difficult during this last portion if you have to venture off the path (the glacier blocked part of the trail in a few places). The trail is a little less clear towards the top, so we weren't sure if we made it to the end or just lost the trail under the glacier. Bring lots of water and some food, it will take you the better part of a day. The lower portion of the trail is doable for many, we even saw a few children along the way, but would suggest that you should be in pretty decent physical shape to tackle the whole trail above the tree line. FYI there is a "bathroom" at the trail head.

This hike will take the entire day, as the drive to the trail head is slow going and long. The hike is only 6.5 miles, but the elevation gain is 2800 feet, and it is rated as difficult. The trail is open in the summer months but can still have snow.

This hike begins at Cloud Cap Trailhead. Follow the signs to Cooper Spur Resort off of Route 35 (north of Timberline). We had a rental car, but it is a very rocky and potholey drive not for the faint of heart to go the last 10 miles to the trailhead! Make sure to park at the first camping area, not the one at the very top. Historic Cloud Cap Inn at the top is closed to the public, but the grounds of inn are worth a stop before or after your hike. The hike starts out in the forest, moves on to a sandier stream area, and then quickly climbs to a till area with a great viewpoints above Eliot Glacier as you get to the rocky crest of Cooper Spur. The route also passes one of the surviving rustic stone shelters. There was a lot of snow on the ground as we climbed up that blocked some of the paths. Towards the end we mostly gave up on the switchbacks and just climbed straight up along the ridge above the glacier. Watch your footing which gives out with the volcanic ash, walking sticks may be very useful. Once you get to this point, there's no markings but it's pretty clear to just go up. This makes a good stopping point to relax and admire the view. There was a shelter of rocks that we sat in. Look for an inscription from an early 1900s Japanese climbing party on a boulder. We saw some people continue onto the ridge towards Mt. Hood, but it looked very dangerous. Due to the fog, we of course could not see Mt. Hood!
