Exemplary Winery With Superb Wines, Beautiful Building and Biodynamic Principles
2019年10月
Cowhorn Winery is a megahit boutique winery in a lovely Applegate Valley setting off-the-beaten-path outside historic Jacksonville (thank goodness for the state's blue directional signs with exact mileage!). Also exemplary is Cowhorn's dedication to the environment with biodynamic principles and all-solar power. The engaging female staff in the tasting room can talk fine wines with the best of such folks, but they also entertain any and all questions about the winery's principles and what exactly they mean on the ground and in the vineyards. So visiting Cowhorn is not only a chance to taste a stellar lineup of wines, ones attracting national notice, but it also provides a chance to learn something more along the way. This is a remarkable place well worth seeking out. Just follow the blue signs....

We had the opportunity to chat with the owner and hear about the farming practices, the Ecco friendly tasting room and enjoy the sophisticated wines. Lovely afternoon

Great wines friendly staff
2018年9月 • 好友
This winery in the Applegate valley of southern Oregon is out in the middle of nowhere. This is one of many wineries in Oregon that will waive tasting fees if you are and Alaska mileage plan member. The rules also say you need to show a boarding pass, but that was never requested, although many of the wineries we visited, including this one, needed to check with someone to confirm the benefit. The wineries benefit because Alaska will let you bring home a case of wine without baggage fees for mileage plan members. We sampled a number of quite good wines here including Spiral 36 a Marsanne Rousanne Viognier blend, a Marsanne Rousanne blend, Viognier, Grenache and Syrah. We brought a few bottles her and the staff provided a cardboard shipping case for the wine. This case is larger than the standard 12 bottle case for upright bottles next to each other, because there are cardboard inserts each formed to hold bottles without touching the next bottle or bottles above or below. Bottles are laid horizontally with 3 bottles in each layer. They came home in fine shape and the box of wine with 12 bottles weighted 40 pounds. It is awkward to transport.
This vineyard is biodynamic and includes a 2 acre asparagus patch which produced 7,000 pounds of asparagus this season with three cuttings per week over seven weeks.

Excellent wines in lovely setting...

The folks at Abacela Winery in the Roseburg area highly recommended we stop at Cowhorn Vineyard for a tasting. Wow! Great wines and generous pourings. The tasting was $15/pp for 4 tastings. If you purchased wine the fee was applied to your purchases. We found the staff friendly and eager to share the uniqueness of the winery's biodynamic culture. The building was built to Platinum Leed level and the tasting room is airy with one complete wall of triple-paned glass facing the vineyard. It was raining the day we visited so my husband and I didn't tour the winery...but what a wonderful way to spend a wet afternoon!

Surprised by Quality and Seriousness without the Attitude
2017年8月 • 家庭
Recently passed by when they were closed but they graciously opened just for us! We were lucky!
Their biodynamic wines are well made and worth the prices.
Spiral 36 was our 1st test and surprised us with the crisp, slightly acidic and salty finish. We weren't expecting their "table wine" to be so well finished.
Viognier was well rounded, longer on the pallet, well balanced and had all the crispy/mineral/salty finish. Delightful.
Grenache 8 was unique for me as I've never experienced a mon-cépage grenache and so have no reference to compare it with. I felt it to be lacking in body but on the nose we had caramel and spices. Not long in mouth but pleasantly light to the pallet.
Syrah 21 was properly balanced (dry, spiced/pepper, black currants, hi-alcohol content but not too present to the nose).
Their modern tasting facilities are well done and carefully planned out but too small for large groups and will soon be in need of extension as this place will have continued success!

Good Tasting
2017年7月
We made arrangements for a special tasting. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable and provided us with an exclusive outdoor setting to taste 5 of their wines. Crackers & water were provided. One can set up a tasting with cheese & meat plate-look at their on-line write-ups. We were pleased with the wines & purchased 3 bottles each of one of their white & red wines.

Wow. A Southern Oregon winery that actually produces great wines. What a novel concept. In addition the Tasting Room is beautiful and the wines biodynamic. Plus wonderful owners and staff. Pricier wines but worth it.

90+ point wines available for tasting!
2017年3月 • 夫妻情侣
It's rare in Southern Oregon to find a winery that boasts several 90+ point varieties of wines, but Cowhorn Vineyard is one. Both their reds & whites have won acclaim from Wine Spectator, Vinous, and Robert Parker. The $15 tasting fee is quite steep for the Applegate Valley, but the quality of wines here is far superior to other vineyards. I would suggest that Cowhorn make comfortable seating available for their patrons so that they can linger and fully appreciate the experience. At present, there are no chairs at all.

We had tried some of the wine at a party and enjoyed it so when we were driving to Jacksonville we took the turn and drove out to Cowhorn winery. The winery sign wasn't easily visible but we found it. They just finished a new lovely tasting room. The vineyard and all the buildings are biodynamic and everything is recycled. The wines we tasted were very good and the staff were knowledgeable and friendly. We liked the wines so much we joined the wine club and picked up a selection of wines to take home.

I came for the Syrah 20...
2016年9月
I'm somewhat new at the business of visiting wineries, seeing my visits less as entertainment and more akin to going to the store to shop for something special. And so, on this occasion, I was at Cowhorn to buy some of the delicious Syrah 20 I'd had the evening before at a restaurant in Ashland. I ended up buying more than that, no surprise to anyone who's gone wine tasting. That said, the grounds and the welcome center were beautifully designed and laid out, well kept, and entirely welcoming. Should I ever get the wine-as-entertainment bug, I could see myself relaxing in the beautiful contemporary space, being informed about what does and doesn't go into a Cowhorn wine. I will undoubtedly visit again next time I'm in the area.
