This was a wonderful experience. At the end of the trail was a blind to see the birds. I was able to watch and photograph a blue heron.

A great place for easy Stoll’s with small kids and bird watching gives an extra focus. Not too far off I-5 which helps but it feels like you are further out.

I came here to see the August 2017 total eclipse, and found it to be beautiful. I'd never been to Oregon before, and after miles of farmland tarnishing my idea of what I thought Oregon was, we showed up here and my opinion was redeemed. You come in on rolling hay fields and are dumped into a lush forest chalk full of birds, and have the freedom to wander however you like.
This all being said, my opinion may be biased by the fact the sun had just been blocked out by the sun and I viewed it as the most beautiful thing I'd ever seen.

Before I start this review, I must include a caveat: I am not a birdwatcher, so take my opinions with that in mind.
Ankeny is basically just open marsh where birds hang out, so unless birding is your interest or hobby, there is not really much at all for you here. I expected at least maybe some nice scenery, but there was none. We were pretty bored most of the time, so we decided to go on a trail. The trail, which was just chopped down grass, was much longer than the map made it seem. Also, in the long grass that the trail consisted of we saw about 5 (garter) snakes on the trail, and little other wildlife! Ankeny Wildlife Refuge did not provide us with a fun time, and we will not be back.

I went here yesterday and walked to the end of the rails but not to the end of the trail and then turned around, and headed back, which on the way back, I did hear a chorus of frogs communicating with each other from different parts of the rail trail. I was really hoping to see a little bit of wildlife, but I didn't; but I did see a little bit of evidence of Beavers in the area; by seeing a few downed trees but not much else.

Amazing boardwalk through Wildlife refuge. Lots of things to view, gorgeous moss, ferns, and trees. Not many creatures viewable on the day we visited, but I'm sure on our return trips we will see some great animals; many nesting spots viewed.

A great area for wildlife viewing and pictures. They have a very nice boardwalk and lots of pull outs and viewing areas around the refuge. One of our favorite places for wildlife photography in the area. Make sure to bring water and snacks.

Great birding all year, excellent in spring and fall. Nice short hikes or you can use your binoculars from the car.

Somehow we had always managed to find the edges of this refuge, but never the heart of it, before this visit.
We wanted a close-to-home place for walking outdoors, had new directions to the boardwalk, and off we went, in a heavy Oregon drizzle.
The boardwalk wanders over the waters, under the trees, and brings you up close to bird life. We saw a young owlet, Shovler and Mallard ducks, Great Blue Heron.
A place to bring your binocs and camera, and ears to hear the bullfrogs and the birds filling the air with sounds of nature.
One note of caution...the chicken-wire that is attached to the boardwalk surface has become unattached in a few places, so if you are not watching out for that, you can get tripped up.

No at this Wildlife refuge not allowed. They are worried about them chasing or stressing the wildlife.
