Afternoon sun light seems to get better picture

Heard of the place for q while and finally got there. It was a nice visit with a few attraction spots. After 6 files from US 26 into the Painted Hills, the roads were not paved - be prepared. The Thomas Gordon visitor center had info and exhibits that were helpful in understanding the place.

Very scenic & a treat for geology fans
2021年8月
If you like beautiful scenery, fossils or geology you need o come here. The colors are spectacular & the landscape is rugged. The monument has 3 separate areas that are quite a distance apart in central Oregon. If you want se see everything it will take all day. You will need to start with a full tank of gas & plenty of water as gas stations & water refill spots are scarce. If you are into hiking, there are plenty of trails of varying lengths that you can hike. I'm glad I visited.

Gorgeous Views

Do stop at the visitor center on the way into the park - it’s really the only place you’ll see any fossils. I guess we expected to visualize embedded fossils along the trail, but, according to the ranger, those are quickly harvested by the geologists before someone poaches them. Still, you can the bands of sediment on the hills, a gold mine for those studying the earth. Worth a stop, but know you could spend most of the day driving to the various sites. Liked the Blue Basin Island trail and Cathedral Rock.

You Gotta Stop Here !

What an amazing place ! This trip we stopped at the Sheep Rock Unit of the park. If you're into geology, this is the place to be. Make sure to go to the Thomas Condon Paleontogy and visitor center first. It will explain a lot about what you;re about to see outdoors. There are 7 hiking trails that range from0.25 miles to 3.25 miles in length. Something for young and old alike. The rock formations, on the trails, are like walking on another planet. Really cool !

Beautiful

The road less traveled was gorgeous. The landscape changed as we drove north toward Washington. I would definitely recommend this road if you have some extra time to stop and take it in.

Don't Miss The Visitor Center
2021年4月
Any time we are in the area, we stop here. SO much information presented in excellent displays, models and graphics. Observation window, watch fossil preservation process by staff. Covid protocol, hand sanitizer at the door, limited entry for gallery if it gets busy. Clean restrooms. Nice little trail at the end of parking lot takes you up for a great view. I'd make this my first stop to best understand what you will see at the different units.

Prachtig!

Breathtaking
2020年10月
Absolutely gorgeous. The 3 areas are spread out so allow 1-2 hours between the 3 sites plus visiting time (I did one site each day) but do them all as they are all different. Drive between towns of Fossil and John Day particularly scenic. Museum was only partly open which was a shame as I've heard the fossil displays are excellent. Very good displays on how fossils are found and processed in open lobby area. Nice hikes at each site. You won't see fossils except in the museum but the rock strata in which scientist find them are beautiful, rich greens, reds and yellows. Best hotels and restaurants in John Day. Smaller enterprises closed when I was there, probably due to COVID. No services or gas stations in some areas so keep your tank filled.

A Nice Day Trip
2020年10月 • 夫妻情侣
The views of this place are scenic. It is amazing to imagine what roamed here many years ago and what the terrain may have looked like. We went to the old ranch and despite it being closed it was nice to read about the history and what each piece of equipment/buildings were used.
We went as a day trip from Idaho. It was about 3 1/2 hours but a nice drive.
