“俄勒冈州中心的一颗宝石”
在过去的许多时候，我们在这片神奇的土地上南北奔波，匆匆赶往其他地方，但这次我们花了几天的时间，在这片偏远的土地上停下来探险，我们很高兴我们这么做了。托马斯康登古生物学中心是开启旅程的一个很棒的地方。这是一个一流的博物馆，展示了这个地方令人惊叹的历史。我们的下一站是彩绘山，非常漂亮。在回北方的路上，我们在化石中学后面的挖掘地点停了下来，在那里人们可以自由地挖掘自己的古代宝藏。这真是一次难忘的旅行。

Requires some effort, but absolutely worth it

The John Day Fossil Beds National Monument comprises three geographical separate units - The Sheeprock unit has the monument Visitor Center and the Thomas Condon Paleontology Center (with a working fossil research lab).  The Painted Hills unit is the most popular due to the colorfully striped hills.  The Clarno unit appears to be the smallest unit.  All three units have nice hiking trails with colorful rock formations.  The Blue Basin Trail is the longest (and the most strenuous) hike.  The Picture Gorge scenic drive in the Sheeprock unit should not be missed.  I spent two days visiting the three units while staying overnight in Mitchell.  

The National Monument is absolutely enjoyable though the three units are not contiguous therefore requiring some driving effort. But the rewards are worth the effort.

A great place to visit.

The John Day fossil beds monument is a superb place to visit. The painted unit has great views of the painted hills and many walks. Part of the road is unpaved but totally fine to drive on. The john day sheep rock unit is also great with a very good visitor centre and again good views and walks.

Unconventional tour

On our way we visited three units. Started in Clarno unit for short time and continue to Blue Basin. Both were very interesting mabye Blue Basin more scenic. Then we continued to Painted Hills. This unit is really great and most photogenic, There are some trails like Painted Hills Overlook trail, Painted cove trail, Leaf Hill trail and Red Hill trail. All trails are worth to do it. All three units was very interesting and worth to visit.

Hidden Gem

This place is a hidden jem in Oregon! You must check it out if you're visiting the west coast. Stay in the area and really explore Eastern Oregon and Grant County.

Get there early or late

It is a wonderful place to photograph at dawn or dusk when the light and colors are at the best. Bring a tele to get some close-in, non post card shots. Good hiking trails around the park.

The Painted Hills are Amazing!!

The photos you've seen do not lie! These hills are intensely colored and you feel like you are in Southern Utah or Norther Arizona! You do have to drive a bit to get them and the paved road ends at a gravel/dirt road. But sooooo worth it! Definitely follow the sign to the Painted Cove as there is where the boardwalk and overlook are located.

Afternoon sun light seems to get better picture

Heard of the place for q while and finally got there. It was a nice visit with a few attraction spots. After 6 files from US 26 into the Painted Hills, the roads were not paved - be prepared. The Thomas Gordon visitor center had info and exhibits that were helpful in understanding the place.

Very scenic & a treat for geology fans

If you like beautiful scenery, fossils or geology you need o come here. The colors are spectacular & the landscape is rugged. The monument has 3 separate areas that are quite a distance apart in central Oregon. If you want se see everything it will take all day. You will need to start with a full tank of gas & plenty of water as gas stations & water refill spots are scarce. If you are into hiking, there are plenty of trails of varying lengths that you can hike. I'm glad I visited.

Gorgeous Views

Do stop at the visitor center on the way into the park - it’s really the only place you’ll see any fossils. I guess we expected to visualize embedded fossils along the trail, but, according to the ranger, those are quickly harvested by the geologists before someone poaches them. Still, you can the bands of sediment on the hills, a gold mine for those studying the earth. Worth a stop, but know you could spend most of the day driving to the various sites. Liked the Blue Basin Island trail and Cathedral Rock.
