Beware, spent the night here, no camp host around. During the night someone climbed into the boat and stole 2 ice chest, and a camping cot. No one around to report theft to. Also a bottle of booze. Use to be safe to leave things out, what is the world coming to. Stay safe, lock everything up, what a way to ruin my birthday.

My family and I stopped for about an hour to take a break from driving on our cross-state road trip. This was a great place to go wading on a hot summer day. The water in the creek was shallow and cool. The rocks were a bit slippery due to the algae, but we didn't mind that at all. Just a bit of bushwhacking required to get from the parking area to the water's edge.

We really enjoyed our stay at this campground. The riverside day-use side of the park seemed inviting. The host was welcoming and informative without being in your face. Sites were good sized and all the facilities were kept clean. The only downfall at all is also why we chose this place. It is literally right off the freeway.

This park has both day areas and RV camping spots. The day area is shady and the river is great for kids to play in. It is very clean and well maintained. The highway is a bit close for tent camping, but you hardly hear it in an RV.

The Hilgard Park exit between Pendleton and La Grande is a must. The park is peaceful, never crowded, and after a nice rest in the area, take the scenic highway from the park into Ukiah. Beautiful forest, meandering stream, meadows fecund with wildflowers, and old dilapidated buildings that provide the avid photographer with interesting subject matter. Ponderosa pine abounds, and the highway is well maintained. Be prepared to average about 50 mph as the highway winds its way between the referenced endpoints. A very special trip. And for fishermen, nuff said, Also, several camp grounds. Don't miss this one. R/Kurt (I make this part of a motorcycle adventure once a year and never tire of the scenery).

Restrooms are well maintained, flush toilets, This is a nice grassy area in an otherwise dry and hot part of Oregon, little stream running through park.

Hilgard is next to the Grande Ronde River and just off I-84 about 6 miles West of La Grande. Kids can run around and play by the river. Late summer the river is generally low and the kids can wade in safely. There are picnic tables available. There is also a Geocache hidden there for those that like to look for these caches. There are 18 campsites with water nearby. There is a small Oregon Trail interpretive shelter. There are horseshoe pits and restrooms.

This is a great place to relax by the river a short trip (10 minutes) from La Grande. The park is free for day use, but does have a campground. Summer is best for playing in the river. Later in the year, the river is not flowing very full, but there are some deeper areas by the bride to play in.
