My original plan was to spend the day by the pool. However the Pacific Northwest had other plans. I headed to the McLoughlin house for some historical fun. There I met a wonderful tour guide and person-Richard. He was very knowledgeable and was able to answer my immense amount of questions.
The house itself has a fascinating story about being moved from down by Willamette Falls that would leave even modern day architects reeling. The home has many original pieces that left this woodworker drooling. The house is fantastic and their stories are amazing. This is a great way to spend time and pay tribute to Dr. McLaughlin that helped establish Oregon

McLoughlin House provides its visitors with an enriching education about Oregon City and Oregon itself. Would definitely recommend visiting this historical home.

We had been to Fort Vancouver National Historic Site on Thursday. Visiting McLoughlin House on Saturday was a very nice addition. The tour is free and given by a volunteer.
The tour covered both floors of the old house and requires climbing a stair way between floors. The talk provided a lot of information about Dr. John McLoughlin and his very important life with Hudson's Bay and later in Oregon City.
We provided a donation because federal funding of this site is limited and they need help to maintain this old home.

The McLoughlin House is Open to the public for tours, on Friday and Saturday. The Tour is Free and takes about 45 minutes.
You learn all about the life of Dr. John McLoughlin. He is known as "The Father of Oregon" for the major role he played in the Oregon Territory.
The House is a two story white mansion that he had built in 1845 near the Willamette Falls down on the waterfront. It was later moved up to its present location on the bluff overlooking the Willamette River. The house is remarkable for it has stood the test of time and is in amazing condition!
The McLoughlin House bedroom are on the second floor. There are a lot of old furnishing inside the house from the time period. and several of them are the actual items owned by the family. The McLoughlin House became the first National Historic site west of the Rockies in 1941. And has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 2003.
Our tour guide Bob was very knowledgeable.

I found out about the house at another park site so I stopped by. The Rangers were full of information about the area and told the story well. Recommend.

So they call McLoughlin the father of Oregon which is kind of quaint, but shows the level of importance he had in the early settlement/fur trading days of the region. The tour is quite informative and will help you see/understand the region more fully after you visit. Not sure the tour guides are all giving the same information in the same way, but our guide said at one point, "...he packed up his wife and..." as if she was a piece of luggage. Not a very enlightened thing to say. Nevertheless, this site is well worth the 45 minute tour. Then walk to the overlook and check out the falls which is where this house first stood. Near the falls.

I finally visited Oregon City on a day that the McLoughlin House is Open to the public for tours. The Tour is Free and takes about 45 minutes. To go on the tour you go next door to the Barclay House. This is the museum office and has a gift shop as well. There is a sign on the sidewalk out front listing the tour times. They are open from 10AM till 4PM on Fridays and Saturdays. last tour is about 3 PM. No photography is allows inside the MLoughlin House. So I bought a few postcards in the gift shop.
You learn all about the life of Dr. John McLoughlin. He was a French-Canadian born in Quebek who was part of the Hudson Bay company at Fort Vancouver on the Columbia River. He is known as "The Father of Oregon" for the major role he played in the Oregon Country. This was at a time when you had British and American people in the Area and both countries were trying to position themselves to end up with the Oregon Country as theirs. So the United States started sending settlers to build up a population of people from the United States in the area.
The House is a two story white mansion that he had built in 1845 near the Willamette Falls down on the waterfront. It was later moved up to its present location on the bluff overlooking the Willamette River. What was very interesting about this was how it was moved. You are shown photos of that. And it sure sounds like it was quite a task.

The tour guide was very knowledgeable and asked you frequently if you had any questions he could answer. And the tour like I mentioned is FREE, if you would like to make a donation they do mention that that would be very welcome.

My wife grew up in Oregon City and I thought it would be fun to visit the McLoughlin House during a trip to visit her family. Her relatives jokingly asked if we were going on a school field trip (it's definitely the kind of place you visit in elementary school). It was a cute quaint little tour, docent-led, that gave a good sense of life at the time it was built and showed you some of the amenities available in a rich guy's home in the pioneer days. I wouldn't go out of my way to visit if I were, say, on vacation in downtown Portland, but this was a perfectly fine way to kill an hour on a relaxing vacation.

John McLoughlin, chief factor for the Hudson's Bay Company, was arguably the most important white man during the colonization of the Pacific Northwest. He established Fort Vancouver in 1825, which bought fur animals from both Native Americans and others.
He also helped countless pioneers as they arrived in the Northwest and needing supplies to get them through the first winter.
After retiring from the Bay, McLoughlin spent the last 11 years of his life at this home in Oregon City.
The home was built in 1846 and it became a museum in 1910. It's listed as a national historic site.
