I truly can't say enough good things about this company as a whole, their mission statement is one of the best in the corporate world and they have won my heart and my business for life. That is why this stop was actually on our itinerary when we were visiting, I don't live near a Penzey's and wanted to see an actual store and peruse the shelves. There were a lot of things I have seen online, but the staff was able to explain things in much better detail and give examples of use which was extremely helpful! We left with quite a few small jars of goodies as well as a jar of Annatto Seeds and information on how to use them. We spent quite a bit longer in the store than we expected and we learned a lot. The staff is fantastic!! If you like cooking I highly recommend stopping in for a visit.

We bought curry powder which contained overwhelming quantities of coriander, rendering the product extremely bitter and unpalatable. The Jerk spice was not even a pale imitation of the famous Jamaican seasoning, tasting more like Lawry's Seasoned Salt than anything remotely Caribbean.
We are a mixed-race immigrant family (Sierra Leonian and White British) and typically buy our spices at small specialty stores that cater to America's various ethnic communities - we will be continuing that tradition and won't be returning to Penzeys. Bill if you're gonna engage in the appropriation of the spice mixtures of other cultures, at least get to know one or two of that culture's people so they can educate you on authenticity. Hey, you may even want to employ a few if you're feeling especially daring.

I go once a month .. my favorite thing about this place is the way the spices are set up in groups line vanilla it can be from Mexico or Madagascar.. if you love cinnamon it can be Ceylon or Saigon your choice .. you can make chicken kabobs with Turkish spice delish or chicken with green seasoning .. so much to look at .. my best spice mix is called Sunny Paris it’s expensive but boy oh boy you will get addicted to it ...don’t forget to pick up a kitchen towel or Two ..they are great with s fun saying ....

The world of Penzy’s spices is wonderful, they are better than any other brand, the have unique blends, they give you lots of free spices when you make a purchase, the staff is super helpful, you can smell everything before you buy... outstanding!
Penzy’s is now the only thing in our spice cabinet and their mixes make everything taste better.

Wide selection of herbs, spices and blends. Spacious inviting store with helpful friendly clerks. Don't forget about their mail-order options either. 5 stars.

I visited this store last night on my way back to the hotel and I was amazed by the diversity of spices they sell. As soon as I walked in I was greeted by a very friendly lady. I didn’t really know what to get at first but they had a great collection of gift boxes so I decided to buy one of those. The lady noticed that my bag with books was ripped and handed me a new back + a free gift. I can’t wait to go home and try my new spices.

They have the best Cinnamon in the world!!
You can find pretty much all best spices you need and quality is definitely not questionable.
The store owner is really lovely and helpful.
I’ll return on my next visit to Portland.

They have almost every spice or spice blend I ever needed. With multiple types and sizes of each. They are always fresh. I still go to the Indian Grocery store for some items. They have a catalogue but the postage is too much and not as much fun.

Have been getting all my spice and flavoring needs from Penzeys. Their always fresh treatments of delicate and robust spices from around the world is wonderful. They have a large selection of spices you can smell at their displays and several sizes of jars and bags.
Amazingly, most all their offerings are equal to or less than the prices to the stuff in grocery stores. The stuff on grocery shelves could have been there for years and a Consumer Reports article said that many grocery store spices are not fresh, are mixed with non-spice ingredients such a sawdust. Never at Penzeys'. I will not buy spices/flavorings from anywhere other than Penzeys.
