I would not go to the area just to see the bridge, but that said it is lovely, you must go out to the tower on the riverside to really appriciate it. Pretty sure it was the entrance to the library in The Librarians (2014 TV series).

I guess it's kind of an unfair thing is that I love Bridges it's almost all of them get five stars. This one's no exception. I'm told it was the predecessor to the Golden Gate. And just for those people out there then don't know any better oh, it is not a Gothic style bridge is an art deco-style Bridge. Beautiful nonetheless

The most beautiful bridge in Portland. If you catch the sun and clouds right some really special views as well. Love this bridge!

Take a walk out on the bridge and you'll get a great view of Mt. Hood on a clear day. The bridge is very interesting to see.

We had no idea that the prototype for the Golden Gate Bridge is in Portland. It was fun to see it. There's a nice park with lots of green space underneath it.

It is easy to walk or ride over this bridge. It is west of the downtown and really is only accessible if you have a car.

St. John's Bridge is a steel and concrete suspension bridge that towers above Cathedral Park and is a nice place to visit if you admire outstanding bridge construction and/or gothic architecture. I had a rental car and drove the 20 or so minutes along a scenic Highway 30 from the Pearl District in Downtown Portland. I drove across the bridge and then down the side streets to Cathedral Park where I found ample free parking under the bridge.
Another reviewer commented about expensive parking, and I have to assume that he parked in one of the lots by the zoo. But on a late Sunday evening in early August, I first found a space in a small parking area in the middle of the street directly under the bridge. After walking the park below, I came back for my jacket and moved the car to a small parking lot in front of Cathedral Park. Though there were people in the park, there was only one other car in the public lot.
The park below wasn't that impressive in and of itself, but I walked the grounds in order to snap photos of the bridge at different angles. There is a large stone monument under the bridge on the grass in Cathedral Park, and it looks as if visitors are able to climb stairs inside the concrete block to the platform on top, but the steel door entry was closed and locked when I was there. It's about 15 or 20 feet, so no great loss. But I'm curious as to whether that's possible earlier in the day . . .
You must walk below the bridge and see all of the consecutive concrete arches that are the pillars underneath the bridge as it extends over Cathedral Park. When viewed in-line, these pillars look like cathedral arches. A wide concrete path of shallow steps gently slopes downhill, leading you under each arch and to the edge of the Willamette River where you can look up and marvel at the sheer size of this dominating bridge.
While I was there, a couple and their wedding party were taking photos on the grass area to the right, and another couple was taking sunset engagement photos with a professional photographer on the bridge, itself, sprinting out onto the highway during brief traffic reprieves, just as I was doing. If you wish to capture the consecutive tunnel-like imagery of the gothic steel arches across the bridge, it's obviously best to go when the traffic is minimal, the weather is warm, and the sky is clear.
There is a narrow concrete walkway and railing (on the bridge edge, but no railing between the walkway and traffic), though it's a tight squeeze for two people to comfortably walk side-by-side as the cars whiz by in the lane next to the walkway. I walked to the middle of this half-mile bridge and highly recommend it. I wouldn't have minded walking all the way across, but it was very windy and getting darker and colder as the sun set, so I decided halfway was sufficient to enjoy the arches of the bridge, the view of downtown Portland and its bridges in the distance, the view of the park and neighborhood below, and the light reflecting off the Willamette River.
From St. John's bridge, it is a 25 minute drive back to Downtown Portland or a 30 minute drive to Portland East / Portland Airport, so the time it takes to drive to and from the bridge will probably be more than the time you actually spend there. If you're on a tight schedule, you might want to skip it, but if you have a car and time to spend, this is a great site to explore after other tourist sites are closed, especially if you are staying in East Portland and are interested in taking the "scenic route" from Downtown Portland. I made time in my busy weekend to visit here, and have beautiful pictures for my trouble. If you have more than two hours to spare, the neighborhood is cute and quaint and may be worth a stroll.
Hope that helps. Enjoy Portland.

Which side of the river gives better access to the base of the bridge - the east (through Cathedral Park) or the west?

US 30 into Portland from the North passes under the St. John's when I was last on the hwy itself this was a very trashy area on the south side I have not been in Cathedral Park in area that was once it's own city (St. John's) but I ran a marathon in 1977 that took the runners through the park and all I could see was the bridge so I would need to rely on the south side for the best camera shot.
