Play these courses often and most times the experience is good. Course is in good shape for public course; baffles me that in July some sand traps have weeds growing in them and some had not been raked. Got to tee box 14 and group two ahead of us was 2 holes behind and consistently rolled their carts across greens. No Marshall to move them along; had to call club house to inform them. Marshall came out but seemed hesitant to say anything. Since course depends on people coming back and not membership fees, moving play along would seem to be a priority but apparently not.

I have played the Great Blue several times now, and have found the course to be challenging, but fair. Good service, friendly players, fair price, and the course is in excellent shape. I am hesitant to write this review since my afternoon tee times may book up!!

If You are a pro, someone who 100% of the time can stay on the fairway, never has to find their ball or stop to go the bathroom then this is your place. If you are human then this is not the place for you. From the moment we stepped foot in the clubhouse to pay for our tee time we were treated rudely, and rushed along. We arrived 15 minutes early and were told we were late (yet still early so a bit confused), when we checked in the with starter early again we're told we better start moving a bit faster. We were paired with two walkers, which we were fine with but knew that this could create a slower time on the course. By the second tee box we were told we (our foursome) needed to either skip a hole or make up five minutes quickly. By hole six we were again told to move faster as we were 7 minutes behind allowed course time to play. When asked why they said this was a beginner friendly course (and I am not even a beginner) we were told this course welcomes beginners but only those who can play at course pace which is less the 14 minutes for a party of four on a par five. By hole ten they told us we were still ten minutes behind pace (yes I needed to use the bathroom and get a water) we were told it was not their problem. They told us we needed to skip a hole or two or not continue to play. At that point it was not worth playing another hole, but we refused to leave until they gave us a full refund which finally they did.
My boyfriend and I have played golf in multiple states and countries, and have NEVER been treated so poorly. Even the two gentlemen playing with us were beyond themselves and arguing with the ranger and manager themselves.
After traveling across the country specifically for golf, I can say without reservation, that this golf course and the people manning it are to be avoided at all costs.

College football officials have our golf tournament and BBQ here each year. Great job by the staff to set up the tournament and Ryan did a great job with the BBQ. Food super and service was great! We will return

I recently played 18 holes at the Great Blue Heron course while in town for business. The green fee was only $34 for 18 on a weekday. There are two courses, both designed by Robert Trent Jones. The Green Back is a more traditionally American style course, and the Great Blue is a Links style course. My only regret is that I didn't have time to play both.

The Great Blue course is deceptively challenging. We approached this links course thinking it would not be too challenging. We're we ever wrong!
Robert Trent Jones looked at how far we could hit a driver and placed a bunker right there. And another bunker to catch our second shot.
I hit a beautiful Alien Sand Wedge that lifted the ball out of a trap and directly into the next trap.
Heron Lakes lives up to its name. There are lakes everywhere to supplement the bunker system. Then there is the high grass that marks the OB.
Anyway, we had a lot of fun threading the needle with our shots to reach the green.
Greens are fast and deceptively sloping.
This is the best public course we have ever played.

There are 2 outstanding courses at Heron Lakes. Green Back a typical northwest course with large fir trees and large greens a fun track. Great Blue is a more links course with more undulations on the green and demanding tee shots, toughest 3 finishing holes you will find. If you only have time for one game while in Portland visit Heron Lakes. I would have given it a 5 but the club house needs to be updated for sure.

Two eighteen hole courses that will challenge you. Great Blue with its sand and some water and Green Back with sand and plenty of water. Both feature a number of wide open fairways as well a several technical one to test you. Course is well maintained. Definitely worth the time to play.

Having played both Great Blue and Green Back courses over the past 20 years, I must say they have both matured to my 4 star level of great courses.
While the Great Blue is their signature pro-am type course with longer holes, faster greens, and immaculate maintain fairways, the Green Back offers some exceptional challenges with very mature trees, hazards (lots of sand and water!), and professionally maintained tee to green... just not quite at the same standard as the Great Blue. (priced accordingly)
I thoroughly enjoy the challenges of both courses and when I want to play close to home in North Portland, I can always count on Heron Lakes GC to be a stellar outing.
The one thing that I'd say hasn't changed much is any kind of renovation to the clubhouse - still feels like they have a 1970s appearance and amenities.
The driving range, putting green and chipping area are all excellent - albeit one must be extremely cautious on the right-hand side of the driving range not to hit parked cars or those entering/exiting the Heron Lakes drive-through entry/exit.
All nitpicking aside, this is a terrific choice in the north Portland area - I'll be back for sure!
