Ce n'est pas un must-see de Portland mais ce petit parc est une oasis agréable dans le béton du centre ville.

So many parks are anti-nature. If there's grass, it has to be cut. If there's weeds, they have to be pulled. If there's trees, they have to be pruned. If there's the slightest bit of organic matter. it has to be bagged and trucked to the dump. And if someone's lazy, chemicals need to be used to kill the undesirable. I once was walking in the woods when I heard a horrible sound usually encountered in suburbia. It was being made by a leaf blower. Someone was blowing the leaves off the trail, in the middle of a nature park! Why? TRADITION. And if a parks person wants to be nice to nature, there's always some one to complain about the resulting messiness.
So it's a big relief to find a park where the attitude seems to be pro-nature. Tanner Springs Park started out scraggly, like a trailer park on the edge of town. The plants were stringy and forlorn. Bare spots of clay and sand vied with the vegetation. Plastic and paper debris waved from the branches and did ballet in the pond. Years later, the park has grown up to be a beautiful swan. The native plants stand proud, shoulder to shoulder, shading the soil and little creeks. There's not a bit of plastic or paper to be found. The natural area is truly natural. The unnatural areas of cobblestone and lawn balance the natural area and don't dominate it. Anyone getting the message? Judging by the number of people just relaxing and watching the butterflies, birds, and fish, the word is getting out. Just leave nature alone!

Belo parque urbano arborizado, com bancos e trilhas no Pearl District. Tem área de um quarteirão. Está cercado de modernas construções. Valeu a visita!

Such a unique park in the middle of the Pearl. In an attempt to help clean up waste water from the city streets and add green space this small park came about. Native flowers bloom through out with a small boardwalk and pond. Zen area in a busy city. If I lived here, I would visit all the time.

This is a nice park. I like how the designers incorporated the history of the area into the themes of the park, with reedy grasses resembling a marsh, historic rail tracks and flowing water. It is not especially "pretty," but it is unique and interesting. We spent most of our time on the terraced platforms along the rail wall, which is a special highlight of this small park. It's not a "must-see" for tourists, but a nice respite from the busy city.

This is a quaint park with a terraced area. There are lots of benches above & within this sunken park. There a fish swimming in the water and a wetlands look to it. Come here to read a book, or just relax. Its very small, sitting in a city block area. I believe it was some industrial area they have regenerated into something full of life.

A small park that looks like a hole in the ground from the road. But in the park is a lovely spring with historical information. The spring is self filtering and used to be used in days gone by, but now the fountain mechanism in the spring is self filtering. This is so well thought out and has so many elements that are natural and artistic. A wonderful space.

Love this little park we stumbled on during a recent walk in the north side of the Pearl. Informational signs explained what they were doing in capturing run off, diverting into a pond (with a few goldfish in it) and reclaiming some old materials. I especially liked the fence (see pictures) that was made from old, repurposed railroad ties from the early 1900's. This one says Carnegie (Steel) 1910.
There were lots of lily pads in the pond and it was decent sized and went under the walkway. Benches throughout to sit on and enjoy the scenery. Right on the max line and plenty of street parking.
Worth a stop to admire if you are in the area.

Tanner Springs Park is a lovely city block to enjoy a little bit of Oregon's natural landscape. It was developed as part of the growth of the Pearl District as a water retention area. The kids love to go visit the fish and ducks in the pond, and every once in a while there is a beautiful blue Heron that fishes in the park. Please read the interesting history of the park in one of the photos I posted. A wonderful place to get some peace and quiet and enjoy the sunshine. Bring a book or craft project and soak up the fresh air.
