Beautiful cathedral drew large crowd for tonight’s weekday evening Mass!
2019年10月
Today was my first day in Portland. As the cathedral is downtown, I knew I wanted to visit today. Tonight’s 5:30 evening Mass was beautiful! Tonight’s evening Mass was well attended! I was so happy to see the church just about full tonight. The priest gave an excellent homily. The music was beautiful! There were many voices singing tonight. While in the downtown Portland area, be sure to stop at the cathedral whether for a moment of quiet prayer and reflection or one of their daily Masses. I am looking forward to returning.

Lovely Cathedral but...

the Mass was very traditional and cold. Saint Mary's Cathedral has a grand old organ; however, the music was dreadfully boring. The songs chosen by the Cantor were songs that only she could sing. In this day and age I believe it is important to choose music that the average person can sing so that there is more participation in the Mass. The readings and the homily were all monotone. I do not mean to sound harsh yet I want to be honest, It was a challenge to literally stay awake during Mass.

Beautiful Cathedral With Stain Glass Windows, A Pipe Organ, And An Archbishop
2018年8月 • 独自旅游
St. Mary’s Cathedral was built in the Romanesque style with byzantine features. And was opened on February 14, 1926. It is a beautiful place of warship that is an inspiring place to attend mass. Almost breathtaking when you walk through the entrance and see all that it has to offer visually and spiritually.

A baptistry is located near the back of the cathedral and that is what you encounter first. It is surrounded in marble. The bottom of it has a tiled mosaic. From here you see the long line of pews in front of you leading all the way to the Apse. It has 9 panels of paintings that display the life and times of Mary. The walls on the west and east sides of the Cathedral there are several lovely stain glass windows. These display images of the saints and the blessed of the Americas. All these stain glass windows are focussed on the subject of the church in the this half of the world.

There is a choir organ just east of the Apse. And there is the Great Organ up in the balcony above the baptistery at the back of the Cathedral. It was build in 1904 and was once the pipe organ for the Holy Cross Church in San Francisco. It was later moved to Portland sometime after the Oakland earthquake in 1989.

To the west of the Apse there is the Eucharistic Chapel where the Eucharist is housed in a gold plated tabernacle. There are two sanctuary lamps that are always lit when the Eucharist is present in the tabernacle. Around the tabernacle there and seats and kneeling benches where you can meditate and pray. And a tapering tower rising up above the tabernacle to the ceiling.

There are two marble statues down near the Apse. The Sacred heart on the west side.
And the Madonna on the east side. Up in the center of the ceiling of the Apse is a large glass dome made by the Povey Brothers, who made many stain glass windows for several of the old Portland churches in the early days of the twentieth century.

St. Mary’s Cathedral is also where you will find the Archbishop of Portland in attendance.
I had never been here before and was amazed to see an Archbishop. In fact it was a first for me at any place of worship I have been to. Yes, this is a grand and beautiful place to celebrate. A great place to come and worship. And to be inspired spiritually.

There is a self-guide tour booklet that you can pick up that tells you all about the Cathedral. As well as copies of The Catholic Sentinel, and donation envelops in the Vestibule as you enter St Mary’s Cathedral.

Lovely Cathedral
2015年7月 • 家庭
St. Mary's Cathedral is located in N.W. Portland at N.W. 18th and Couch St. It is a very ornate and beautiful structure with amazing stained glass windows and gorgeous statues. Mass is performed on Sundays with an afternoon service at 5:30 p.m.
If you are interested in seeing a lovely cathedral located in downtown Portland, I cannot recommend it ore highly.....a truly remarkable place...quiet, beautiful, and elegantly constructed.
