Gorgeous views. You'll want to just keep taking shot after shot. Breathtaking in some places. I lucked out and had a bright sunny day with blue skies and great weather.

If you want to get up close and personal with the famous Oregon dunes and aren't interested in ATVing it, try this trail (2 miles RT from the trail head). It starts off as an established and fenced trail that takes you to beach level. Then it's a trek across open sand (being reassured by an occasional blue-tipped wooden trail marker or faded "trail" sign that you are headed in the right direction) to a wooded trail that will have you wondering if it will ever end: I can HEAR the ocean getting closer, but I can't SEE it. The vegetation thins overhead, and suddenly you are at the wide and uninhabited beach. What is so great about these Oregon beach trails is the bright neon # that is posted here should you need assistance and need to tell emergency response where you are. Well worth the trek if you are up for it, as the getting back is very uphill once you clear the wooded portion and start crossing the open sand again.

This is a nice spot to take a load off and watch the views. After you’ve relaxed, go out and head to the beach. The trails are not difficult and are a decent walk. The beach is long, sparse with people and just nice.

When we were here the seashore was very windy and chilly. I wore a hoodie and was glad of it. The sun was out, but the wind made it 20 degrees cooler than in town. We found lots of shells and walked several miles in two locations. Very dog and kid friendly.

We like to visit the coast in winter, as a matter of fact we walked this loop on our honeymoon 25 years ago this month. We parked at the Oregon Dunes Day-use Area ($5 or use your federal lands pass). Clean toilets and good drinking water available at the trailhead. We chose to use the paved trail through picnic areas as access to the beach loop trail, and avoided the steep switchbacks from the overlook. The north trail out to the beach was blocked by a large pond, as the weather has been rainy. We decided to just go out and back on the south end of the loop, and turn back if there was deep water on the trail that way as well. Surprisingly, we were able to skirt every pond and make it out to the beach (~1.5 miles). Trail is mixed sand dunes and coastal forest.

The overlook provides a nice trail, picnic tables. All you really can see is the beautiful sandy beach with overgrowth hiding the ocean beach unless you walk the trails out from there. We walked the trail out to the beach, about 1.5 miles one way, and in a lot of sand. The end result was a really nice quiet beautiful beach, except for the 3 dogs that folks brought that were not allowed. Anyway, another 1.5 mile trek back. My husband's knees did not fair well from the long walk on the sandy trail.

But I noticed that the trees have grown up so much that the view is almost gone, unless you want to slog out in the sand. Which I did not.
Note that this park charges a fee of $5 to park and use any facilities. There are flush toilets. There are lots of stairs but also a long ramp for wheelchairs, and some informational signs.

The beach trail near Reedsport is an amazing place. The dunes that stretch south from Florence offer a lot of recreational choices. Many of those choices have their own locations. This is a state managed area. The trail starts inland and goes to the beach. The vantage point is up a set of stairs, and makes for a good photo op, but pictures would not do the place justice. The sand goes on for a quarter mile to the deflation plain, where you can see lots of trees and wildlife. There are species of birds that nest there. The beach is beyond the deflation plain. This is one of the shorter hikes. Sand depth makes it a great place for kids and others with ample energy to run and hop, slide, etc., but plan on having sand in your shoes and a good leg workout from plodding in deeper sand areas. Tiny kids will likely not enjoy this stop, and anyone with very small children will appreciate a pack or some way to transport your tired toddler. Sunscreen is advisable.
