We stopped at the Oregon Dunes Overlook and did the hike to the beach. It took us about 30 mins to get to the beach. It is definitely worth doing!! Stunning sandy beach and amazing ocean views await!!

There are many wonderful spots to hit along this long recreation area. During the summer parts are closed for bird rehabilitation. There's a great map that shows what is open to what activity and when. We found a dog-friendly, off-leash section at Siltcoos Beach near Florence which had a large parking lot big enough to turn around RVs and trailers (there is an OHV trail heading north). There are no services at the beach parking but there's a lot in the towns.

It takes some effort to get out to the Oregon Dunes, but the view and the experience is so memorable! Be sure to be physically able to climb the sand, because it can be a grind to scale a sand dune…

Beautiful expansive dunes. We had NO idea they would be so vast and gorgeous. Steep, high, clean, windy, wonderful. Oceanside experience was great fun too. There are some BIG dunes that are a kick to ride down.

Didn't expect kids to love this part of our road trip as much as they did. Unlike beach sand, the sand here is very clean. The area we were in was pretty much empty - maybe Oregon kids were still in school. We brought a beach ball and with the strong wind, it was fun to watch it roll uphill (and a challenge to catch it)!
Cellular reception was a bit spotty so it was a bit challenging to purchase the $5 recreation parking pass online - eventually we were able to by walking uphill.

We jumped out and scrambled up the first big dune we saw. What a wild bit coastline! This is obviously a big area for ATVs, with extensive trails for them to use.

The overlooks at the day use area were kind of disappointing. So many young trees now cover the dunes, so you can't see a lot of the sand. We did not hike to the beach. That maybe would have raised my ratings. Bathrooms available.

came across these as we were driving along the coast line. pretty cool to see the dunes in oregan. pleanty of places to pull off and enjoy the day.

Beautiful sand dunes along the shoreline! When the wind is strong you will want a light jacket, and sun glasses are helpful. There were windsurfers and fishermen in the area we saw. There is camping available. Beautiful natural area to hike and enjoy!

I will be in Oregon in mid August with my husband, son and daughter and would like to give my kids the experience of running down a huge sand dune. Is this possible in the Oregon Dunes Day Use Area? When I read online about this area, it only talks about ATVs or hiking. I don’t mind if there’s a hike to get to a sand dune, but we will be getting plenty of hiking in elsewhere in the state. I also don’t wNt to have to run away from ATVs while doing this.
If any of you have any experience with this, I’d appreciate your insight. Thank you.

I don’t remember. I had a Toyota pickup and we set up a tent to cook it. They likely have parking, but I don’t know what kind of hookups there might be. Call them!

Google for the companies, then use Trip Advisor to pick the best that meets your needs. Watch out for those that haven't been in business long, and be sure to shop price. It can vary quite a bit, but don't skip on quality, safe gear. The Dunes are known as an Orthopedic's Heaven - lots of business!
Depending on your dates, reservations are most strongly recommended - why lose the opportunity if you now when you'll be there. This is a very popular sport.

Hi, we're planning to come to the area to rent a sand dune buggy for the day, but we're aware the Snowy Plover restrictions are from March-Sept. Are there any areas that you can use dune buggies within this time that aren't nesting areas? Thanks for your help, Joe and Cat

Where’s the best rv camping that you can get a truck/toy hauler in and drive your ATV’s straight from camp onto the dunes? How early can you book reservations out? Any other helpful hints would be great!

The Koa is awesome and they have an ATV shop down the road with a mechanic and gas. There is drive on access to the Dunes from the park. Nice large camp areas, we were able to park our trailer and UTV with family as we were staying in town. Hope this helps!

What beach allows you to have a fire?
Where did you get the firewood?
We will be staying in Gardiner, so looking to do some kite flying and would be nice to have fire on the beach in the evening.

It is beach dependent, check the rules for the beach posted at the entrance to the beach. Here are some fire rules...
Any specific rules for that beach will be posted at its entrance.
Beyond that here are a few fire rules:
•Use small pieces of wood only. Large logs are prohibited.
•The fire cannot be bigger that a lawn chair.
•The fire must be west of the vegetation line ~ NO EXCEPTIONS.
•Build your fire away from the beach grass & piles of driftwood.
•Extinguish the fire with water. Don't just cover with sand.
As for the wood, just use small pieces of driftwood, but bring your own kindling. Also some hotels, like the Driftwood Shores in Florence sell beach fire kits.

I will be visiting the ODNRA in late June and plan to arrive from the north. I'm looking for recommendations on where to enter the area. Should I make more than one stop? More than one entrance? Should I plan a full day or part of a day there? I'd like to see geologic features, views, and participate in 4-wheeler dune fun. I plan to enter from the north and will head south later that day or the next day. Any advice will be appreciated.
