An easy trail with lovely scenery along the path to the falls-a lot of mossy rocks and flowers. There aren’t any difficult elevation gains, mostly gentle inclines. Ramona Falls are a beautiful cascade over a rocky backdrop. There is a small river crossing with a few fallen trees forming “bridges,” but I don’t know if the water would be as shallow earlier in the season. Levels usually drop in July. It took me a little over 5 hours for the 7.5 mile loop with plenty of photo stops and a lunch break at the falls.

My son and I went for a 14 mile hike up to the lowest viewpoint of Mt Hood, Reed Glacier, Sandy River's watefalls, from meadows on Yocum Ridge. Along the way there we meandered through the moss ladden trees amongst mushrooms and lichen to Ramona Falls with its mossy rocks and rainbows where sun peers through the shady trees.

This is about a 7 mile round trip hike when you start at the Ramona Falls Trailhead. The waterfall is beautiful. I describe it, based on how the water flows, as almost a collection of 1000 little waterfalls combining together to form 1 larger very impressive waterfall.
I used this hike as good exercise to help prepare for backpacking trips. The biggest challenge is using the logs to help you navigate your way across one the the rivers, but it is managable. Your reward for this river crossing, is a terrific view and photo location of and for Mt. Hood.
The return loop takes you through a very scenic stretch of the Pacifc Crest Trail.
Overall a terrific experience.

Excellent hike well worth the trip up to the breathtaking waterfalls. The first 3.5 miles is a steady up on a pretty good trail. The 2nd part is downhill, if you take the trail to the left of the falls it does add and Xtra mile so you go 8 miles total. It is pretty though. Crossing the Sandy river , many options my teens took the road less traveled , a long log and a few rock hops. If you need to hold onto something there is a log with a log you can hold onto. Will attach a picture. It's not too hard to cross and short distance across river.

If you want to see a beautiful waterfall in Oregon, this is the place. Make sure to go there early so you can enjoy the view and get great pictures. Be prepared for a long walk and have to be able to get across a river. Highly recommended it.

Loop trail along the Sandy river. Crossing river on a log (not the bridge in the picture) is moderately difficult. Falls are shaded and cool even on a warm day. Return trail along a creek is delightful. Fairly heavy use area. Daily/annual pass or interagency pass (e.g., national park pass) required at the trailhead.

This is a moderate to strenuous hike; the round trip being 7.1 miles. It is not a hike for someone wanting an easier trek, but it's not too difficult either, and if you're not intimidated by crossing the Sandy river by walking across the logs (many people do it with their dogs and I thought it was more fun and exciting than risky), then this hike is a must to experience. It is not a hike for children, although teens would probably enjoy it. Older folks who are fit should be able to handle the hike, as well. Anyway, it goes without saying that Ramona Falls is very beautiful. It's one of the loveliest sites in the Mt. Hood National Forest, and for that reason it's a busy trail. The allure is the waterfall itself, but that is more of a "grand finale" of many other beautiful views, especially of Wy'East (Mt. Hood). The base of the Ramona Falls hike, Old Maid Flat, is an area of volcanic deposits! The last eruption, "Old Maid," occurred during the 1700s and ended around the Lewis and Clark expedition. For this reason the grittiness and sandiness of the earth during the lower end of the trail is noted. The wildlife is all around: I saw a deer cross the trail and spotted woodpeckers in the trees. That being said, there was a cougar attack in this area last year, so hiking alone is more risky. Anyway, this is not a hike if you are seeking solitude. You may be able to avoid the crowds on a weekday, but expect weekends to be busy. Otherwise, go and enjoy this gorgeous hike! Signs are present during the hike and it's very easy to follow. Be sure to pack a snack to enjoy while you rest at the base of Ramona Falls.

I had read a tip on Twitter that this is a great hike for broken shells of human beings. I perked right up when I read that. I picked up my Deuter Futura 38 AC backpack and filled it with supplies for a hike of this magnitude with emergency overnight gear in case I had to spend a night in the woods. Always be prepared is my motto. Anyhow I zipped my way up to the Ramona Falls Trailhead. It was a Tuesday and there were over 30 cars in the parking lot. They say it can get up to a hundred on the weekend. There are also thieves that have a habit of breaking into your car so my advice is make sure not to have anything visible in your car when you start your hike. There are a couple of porta potties in the parking lot and they are the filthiest things you can imagine. The antics of some people and what they have done to these porta potties shows the kind of "rage" that is unfortunately in this world. I signed in at the trailhead and thankfully a young lady hiker had a pen she loaned me to do this, which was quite gracious of her. I proceeded to hike. The trail is easy to follow because it is as wide as a road from heavy use. I followed it until I reached the creek crossing. I had hesitation here, but the young lady who loaned me the pen, showed me the perfect example of how to cross the log without falling off of it. I made it across the log with less difficulty then I imagined. I proceeded to hike up the trail. It rises gradually so it is pretty easy to negotiate. Along the way I met various groups of people coming down from the falls. One party had a lady in it that had to be in her 70's or 80's and I was very impressed she had done the hike but also had negotiated that creek crossing. I continued hiking up hill and suddenly the rain starting pouring down hard. I got under cover and immediately put on my rain pants, coat, and my pack has a built in rain cover which I quickly placed on it to keep it dry. In a few more minutes I was at Ramona Falls. It is like a wide giant cascade fall that breaks over rocks that almost looked like hand placed bricks, but it is natural. It was raining super hard as I mentioned and the mist was heavy in the air. I took some pictures and a couple of people who were already there were kind enough to take a photo of me in front of the falls. The couple left and I had the falls all to myself for a whole 30 seconds before more people showed up. I decided to hike out and get back to my car. It rained sporadically during that time. My main concern was the creek crossing again on the way back but I actually did it even faster and better the second time. With the most challenging part of the hike out of the way I made good time to my vehicle which to my great relief had not been broken into. For directions to Ramona Falls just drive to the town of Zigzag and turn left on East Lolo Pass road and follow the signs as you come to them to Ramona Falls trailhead. Make sure you carry water and some food for energy. Also you need to pay the $5.00 fee or buy an annual pass to do the hike. In Zigzag you can pick these up at the Ranger Station and they have much cleaner bathrooms then what is up at the trailhead.

We spent the previous night at the Timberline Lodge at Mt. Hood. It took us 30 minutes to reach the trailhead and, because it was just after 9am when we arrived, there was ample parking and hardly anyone else on the trail. Our goal was to complete the hike before driving the rest of the day to the Oregon Coast. We moved quickly with water bottles and some snacks and were able to complete the circuit in 3 hours (allowing some for rest stops, photo stops, and time to enjoy some pictures and the environs at the Falls). Dress in layers, bring a hat and wear proper footing with a good grip.

Loved the hike although the first half of the forest is a little less “forest” and more like sparse aged woods, after the river crossing the forest is much healthier and gorgeous. This IS NOT a hike for elderly or small kids 10 and below they will have to balance across logs over rapids and hike steep hillside with plenty of gravel and sharp rock (moms worst nightmare) bring lots of water and snacks. I would make this an all day trip 4-5 hours. Drive up is nice and parking is good. We saw lots of pets on the trail so it’s ok for Rover :) sun hat is a must for the first half due to less shade...but absolutely a must see ... I’ll leave a few pics but the falls are to beautiful to ruin with a pic. ENJOY!

Why is the bridge not being put back in place? We've been going here for years and the bridge has always been put back for the summer. Very disappointing, are they trying to cause accidents? Our tax dollars NOT at work...

We brought our border collie/australian shepherd puppies. They crossed on logs across the Sandy River. They loved the hike. Dogs are always welcome into Wilderness areas in Oregon. There was water in the river as well as at Ramona Falls.

What time is the best time to hike Ramona falls specifically crossing the sandy river?
撰写日期:2017年8月21日
We found the logs "move" or disappear as well. So really depends on time of year, water level, etc.

Visiting the area during the first weekend in May 2017. I've seen videos and articles stating that the little bridge gets put into place in mid-late May. Is is worth visiting while I'm there? Are we going to completely submerge our feet just as soon as we begin this trail? LOL. Not afraid of water, just don't want to hike that far with soaked frozen feet from the very start. Thanks!!

Wondering about the status and level of difficulty at the river crossing. Planning to be in the area at the end of September 2016.
撰写日期:2016年8月13日
I think it's fine....If you don't feel comfortable walking on the log then just sit and scoot that's what I did. Probably not good for elderly. Another great hike is Clear Lake 5 miles around lake and walking through lava beds. Water is Bright blue....They have cabins and I think Kayak rentals. Have fun > Both hikes are beautiful.

Just wondering how the river crossing looks at this point. We will be in the area at the end of September and are concerned about how difficult it may be to get across. We are reasonably fit, but not extremely adventurous.
撰写日期:2016年8月13日
It's dangerous period if the logs are wet. You have stay focused. If you're an experienced hiker who likes challenges, the crossing should be enjoyable.

We plan to drive as far as possible to the falls. How far is the walk from the parking area. We will be in this area late June 2016. Also, what sort of weather can we expect.
Thanks to all. Charley.

Sorry this is late!
You will drive up to the trailhead, then it is about a 3.5 mile hike to the falls, 7 miles RT.
The weather varies, so wear layers. Bring a pack to carry your layers as necessary. Also, bring water and snacks. Most will bring a lunch to eat when they arrive at the falls.
Please remember to pack out what you carry in!

I plan to be in that area next week and would love to do the Ramona Falls hike but am nervous about the river crossing and the bridge being out. Was wondering how difficult it is to cross without the bridge in place and what the river looks like at this point (if there are any pictures?)
撰写日期:2015年7月8日
There are several logs across the river. One has a second one that acts like a railing. Crossing there is very easy. Since we have had little rain the river is more like a stream, but still an active one.
