There's a lot to see along the Rogue Umpqua Scenic Byway so you may need to plan your time for hikes, etc. This stop is well worth it and is a scenic viewpoint pullout on the road so very quick stop. No hiking needed. Pull over for a great view of Mt. Thielson and an interpretive sign. Also visible is Mt. Bailey and an interpretive sign about it as well. You will get better views of Mt. Bailey from Diamond Lake just around the bend.

Skiing the Nw flanks of Mt. Thielsen was the epitomy of a mountain wilderness winter wonderland. It used to have a permanent snow cap, but the "nonexistant" global climate change has eliminated the summer snowcap. In the summer, make a long day hike to the summit for one of the most exhilarating sensation of floating over the land and incredible views. Those views, however, are now somewhat hazed out by a world-wide polluted atmosphere

The pull out seems odd, as the lake and mountains are to your Right, going East, but it is up the hill and unobstructed for viewing. Great info on how volcanic mountains change over time.

a great place to go if you like wild flowers, hiking, photographing scenery or any of the many outdoor activities you might want to do

The trailhead to Mount Thielsen is off of Highway 138. The trail takes about an hour or more to hike to the top of the Mountain. Mount Thielsen is over 9,000 feet tall and parts pf the trail are steep and the final approach to the summit is could be a little intimidating since it goes through a narrow slot in the rock. The exposure is dramatic and the view is incredible.

If you plan a visit make sure you check the weather forecast. As with other peaks in the Cascades, this mountain can change personality from welcoming to very dangerous, depending on the approaching storm. Lightning storms in the area should definitely be avoided. The peak is called the lightning rod of the Cascades for a good reason.

There is a lookout point just across from Diamond Lake on Highway 138, which allows you a clear view of both Mount Bailey and Mount Thielson. Mount Thielson is known as the "Lighting Rod of the Cascades". It has a spiny pinnacle that attracts lightning. These mountains formed as did Diamond Lake as the result of the climactic eruption of Mt. Mazama 7,700 years ago. There are restrooms and picnic tables at the viewpoint. It is well worth a visit.
