It was beautiful relaxing to just go around and see how they keep up this historic building. It’s so very keep up , manicured plants .

Looked interesting as unusual design and finish for a capitol state building, so sorry we were unable visit. Couldn't find any info as to when it will reopen.

In an effort to seismically retrofit the historic building and to make other critical safety upgrades, the main portion of the Capitol, including the Rotunda; Galleria; Welcome Center; House and Senate Chambers; Governor's Ceremonial Office; Governors’ Portrait Hallway; and Observation Deck closed on July 1, 2022 for construction. The project has an estimated completion date of January 2025.
Legislator offices in the wings remain open M-F 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. and visitors will still be able to observe 2023 and 2024 Legislative Sessions onsite. To learn more, visit https://www.oregonlegislature.gov/cams.

This was my 45th state Capitol so I feel relatively qualified to say that the exterior is unusual. Not all state Capitols are in the classic style of course (such as Hawaii, Delaware, New Mexico etc) but this one is unlike any other I have seen with it’s Art Deco styling.
The building is fairly easily located in downtown Salem. There is on-street metered parking adjacent to the Capitol - it’s not expensive. We also found 3 hour parking about 5 minutes walk away in the downtown area that appeared to be free.
There is ongoing construction (April 2022) so you enter by a side door and go thru security. There is an information desk and the 2 ladies there were extremely helpful.
There is access, on a sled-guided tour, to view the Senate and House but to actually enter them would I guess require the official tour. The decor inside is fantastic.
Well worth a visit

We decided to see another Capitol building during our road trip.
This building was quite unlike the others given the Art Deco style as it was finished in 1938. This was the Oregon’s third capital so far they and undergoing some extensive renovations on the exterior.
Tours were restarted in mid-July but were only given during the weekdays. Unfortunately for us this did not match our travel plans so this we just spent some time walking around the exterior.
The huge gilded Pioneer Statue at the top of the cylindrical “dome” really gleamed in the afternoon sun. In the front, two large Vermont marble relief sculptures depicted the Lewis, Clark and Sacagewea and a covered wagon with pioneers. On the opposite side was the walk of flags and a replica Liberty Bell. Lots of mature trees dotted the grounds along with gardens, statues and memorials. It was a good trade off until we return for an inside tour.

Enjoyed the grounds outside, the Art Deco style is nice. Could not go inside, but maybe another day.

Road trip! Capitol # 43! Our guide, Suzanne, made this capitol even better! Tours are on the half hour. We almost joined a school group but decided to wait when we were told the there were no school groups on the next tour. Great move as we were the only people on our tour. Beautiful building with easy street parking close to the entrance.

One of the most beautiful sites is when the cherry blossoms bloom. There are plenty of walkways and wheel-chair accessible. Benches line the walkways for a nice rest or photo opportunity.

The Oregon State Capitol is a bit different from other capitols. The dome is more of a cylinder. It is quite striking in appearance. The murals on the interior are outstanding. Worth a stop.

Always impressed by the Oregon State Capital building with its gold man standing watch over the Art Deco marble building built in the mid 1930s after the previous capital was destroyed by fire.

There is metered parking on the north, south and west sides of the capitol. It's a little hard to find when legislators at in session.

The rest room on the main floor is open when the building is open. Generally it's closed on the weekends. The closest otherwise is McDonalds.
