Uninviting. The place was empty and we were chased out and not offered a reservation but pointed to go to ANYWHERE but there. If you don’t want the “public” to come taste your wine, take down your signs and search results. Been to Napa and Montepulcino and felt more welcome. Get over yourselves!

On a recent trip to the Willamette Valley for wine tasting, my wife and I visited Cristom Vineyards on our second day of tastings, and found it to be a very nice, refreshing change of pace from the other wineries we were visiting on the trip. It seems like the majority of wineries to visit are in the Dundee Hills, which is where we spent most of our time. I’m really glad we added Cristom to our list, since it’s located further south in the Eola-Amity Hills AVA, which is simply a different area geographically and makes wine that was a bit different from what we were tasting in Dundee. In addition, Cristom offers a really nice, laid back experience that we enjoyed.

We signed up for The Cristom Experience, which is a two-hour private tour and tasting for $75 per person. The Cristom Experience starts with a wine tasting flight, followed by a break to take a walking tour of the vineyards and learn more about their biodynamic farming practices, before returning for a second tasting flight. We really enjoyed the format of this, which had the perfect balance of drinking wine and getting education about the wine and winemaking process. Our host, Mitch, was also very nice and did an excellent job of explaining the Cristom philosophy to us. We learned a lot more about Oregon and the Willamette Valley as a whole from Mitch than we did anywhere else on our trip. The only thing I would recommend is that Cristom make it a little easier to book tastings, since there is no online booking option, meaning you have to call or email to set it up. I also didn’t love that the full cost of the tasting was charged far in advance when we first booked it, which was not common among the Willamette Valley wineries we visited. Most charged the tasting fee only a day or two ahead of time, if at all in advance.

When we arrived at Cristom, we immediately noticed that the winery is in a beautiful location with vineyards dotting the steep hills around it. It’s generally a more remote, rural location than some other wineries we visited, and the winery itself reflects this. The winery has a more wild, less polished feel than many others that are more touristy. We ended up really liking Cristom because of this, since it had a very authentic feel that was carried out throughout the experience.

When we first arrived, Mitch took us into a nice private room where we did our first tasting flight, which included a rosé of pinot noir, chardonnay, and two of their less expensive pinot noirs. Everything in this first tasting was perfectly fine, but none stood out nearly as much as the wines we tasted in the second flight later in the morning. During the first tasting, we learned a lot more about the geography of the area, which helped us understand what goes into making wine here and what makes their wine unique as compared to pinot noirs from other geographic areas, such as in California.

The next part of the tour was really fun, with the chance to go out and walk around the vineyards. The winery uses biodynamic practices to grow their grapes, and we had a chance to meet and feed the flock of sheep that they use to maintain the grasses in the vineyards, something totally fun and unique. We also then got a tour of the tanks and barrel rooms to get a better feel for the various steps in the winemaking process.

After that, we finished the experience with our second wine tasting, which was accompanied by some cheese and charcuterie that were included. This second tasting featured more of Cristom’s higher end wines, including four single-vineyard pinot noirs from vineyards in the hills immediately surrounding the winery. It was interesting to compare the four and see how with even just tiny changes in altitude or terrain, the wine can take on slightly different flavors. Although I can’t say that any particular wine within the tasting stood out in particular to us, they were all good and we took several different bottles home with us so that we can try the wine again in the future.

I have only positive things to say about our morning at Cristom. We had a wonderful time tasting eight of their wines and getting a full tour of the premises and explanation of their philosophies from Mitch. We ended up enjoying their wines, which weren’t the very best we had during our trip to the Willamette Valley, but which were solidly good and very good expressions of Willamette Valley pinot noir. We would definitely recommend adding Cristom as a stop on any wine tasting trip to the area.

Due to COVID-19, Cristom is doing tastings only by reservation; we arranged a tasting via our hotel’s concierge. Our tasting, on a Friday morning, was a fantastic experience—we were the only ones there!

The gentleman who assisted us with our tastings, Tim, was excellent—he was extraordinarily knowledgeable about the winery, the wines on offer and how they were made, and the region. A couple of times during our tasting, he even brought out maps to help us understand some of the geographic detail of the region.

The wines were great!—so great we ended-up buying a few and shipping them home (nicely, they waive shipping fees for six bottles). We tasted a great variety of rose, whites, and reds. Cristom featured the Pinot Noir and Chardonnay you would expect in Oregon, but is also growing Viognier and Syrah! The Chardonnay and Pinot Noir was excellent; it was fun to taste how microclimates and soil variations on their properties affected the expression of those varietals. We were lucky enough to taste both the Viognier and Syrah, and they were excellent; the Syrah is made in a traditional northern Rhône style with Viognier mixed-in.

The setting is lovely: a large patio with gorgeous views. We had perfect weather and enjoyed the view, including the mountain range in the distance.

A fantastic experience: great setting, great service, great wine. Put Cristom on your list for sure!

My first experience with Cristom Vineyards was not that great. I heard about their pinots and wanted to try. I called for reservation and got there on time. I walked in and saw this lady at the counter, told her that I have a 1pm and she directed me to sit at the patio. I waited for 30 minutes and nobody came to serve me. I walked back to the counter and saw a guy and that same lady who checked me in earlier. I told them that I waited for 30 mins and no server and no service. This lady did not say a word and that guy said he will serve me. I find it hard to believe if there is no discrimination. I tried to call on her several times when she walked by my table. She ignored me several times until I walked up to her face and ask for customer service. This guy, Tim, tried his best to serve us and their pinots are great. BUT, with this type of service, I do not think I will ever return. I'm sure I can find other great pinots in Oregon. If anyone who is Asian and have a different experience, a positive one, let me know. This is unacceptable!

Loved this wine tasting Eco Tour with Tim. Well worth the $75. We spent more than 2 hours touring the entire estate tasting the wines ( and grapes)at each block of grapes. We look learned so much about the vineyard, Pinot noir and their production process. Tasting each grape and related wine in the actual vineyard were the highlight of our tour.

Cristom Vineyards was one of the highlights of our trip to Willamette Valley! A beautifully scenic drive and equally stunning views from their tasting room/deck. The staff is knowledgeable, friendly and eager to assist. The variety of wines to try was a treat! We are already planning our next trip back here, next year. Highly recommend!

We thoroughly enjoyed our Estate experience at Cristom. We made reservations in advance and were the only two guests during the tour. Our tour guide was a sommelier and was extremely knowledgeable about all things wine, which was great because we felt comfortable asking a plethora of questions. We started out with a line-up of the three wines: 2018 Estate Rose (Eola-Amity Hills, Willamette Valley), 2017 Mt. Jefferson Cuvee Pinot (Noir Willamette Valley), and the 2016 Estate Syrah (Eola-Amity Hills/Willamette Valley). While we sipped on these wines, we played a bit of a smelling/guess that odor game which is used to help guests with identifying tasting notes. After enjoying those wines, we piled into the Cristom car for a drive around the vineyards. This was an incredibly unique experience as we've never been driven into and around the vineyards before. We visited several of their blocks and were able to sample pinot noir, viognier, and syrah grapes straight off the vine. It was also nice to look out from the top of the hill over the expansive Oregon countryside. We also stopped by a dirt pit and scrambled around that for bit, which allowed us to gain a better understanding of the soil types at Cristom.

Upon returning to the tasting room, we enjoyed a charcuterie board along with our last four wines - all pinot noirs: 2017 AVA Series (Dundee Hills), 2017 AVA Series (McMinnville), 2017 AVA Series (Eola-Amity Hills), and the 2017 Eileen Vineyard (Eola-Amity Hills). We also got to sample a bit of the 2017 Jesse Vineyard Pinot Noir. All of the wines were delicious and well balanced - nothing was too earthy or too berry-flavored. They were all complex, velvety, and very interesting. Overall, our experience at Cristom was the best wine tasting tour and experience we have ever done so far and we would highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in learning more about wine.

This was our very first winery during our trip to Oregon, and it was an amazing introduction to Oregon wines. My boyfriend and I were there on a Wednesday, so the winery was not very busy. Holly was a fantastic person to take us through our wine tasting, and she was so personable and friendly. She is very knowledgeable about wine, and e learned so much about Oregon wines and Cristom. She even gave us the perfect lunch suggestion that was on the way to our next winery (Blue Raeven Farmstand in Amity has amazing sandwiches and pies for a quick stop between wineries!). We enjoyed the wines at Cristom so much that we left with several bottles to enjoy back home. This winery was still our favorite even after visiting several others in the area, and my boyfriend who is very into craft beer now loves wine because of Cristom. We will definitely be back when we are in Oregon again!

Excellent wines & an extremely thorough tasting experience. Holly walked our group of 10 through everything from the history of the vineyard, to details about their wines, to all sorts of other wine-related topics. It was easily the best/most educational tasting experience our group received in the Willamette Valley...and we went through a large number of tastings during our stay. Highly recommended!
