You will see lots of pine trees and mountains in this part of Oregon, but this pass in particular has jaw dropping scenery on its 80+ mile loop (only accessible a few months of the year). The lava rocks and the view from the Dee Wright Observatory are like looking at the landscape of another planet!
Plenty of sharp bends on parts of the route, but with a myriad of trails and views, it's an absolute must for anyone staying in the area with at least half a day to spare

A beautiful drive, lots of curves, some burned out areas, but still very beautiful. The lava fields in the middle are very interesting. The Dee Wright Observatory was something you will not find elsewhere. Hard to imagine it being built. Proxy falls was a great stop and very nice hike. A very different drive.

Great loop drive with lots of interesting things to stop and see along the way. Flowers, Dee Wright Observatory, Proxy Falls, Clear Lake, Salhalie/Koosah Falls, Camp Sherman, Head of the Metolius, Wizard Falls Hatchery, and more.

We had a beautiful drive up the McKenzie Pass, at times it was quite steep with a gorge at the side. So also a little terrifying (but eh, we’re Dutch so our country is flat). And the enormous lavafields, such a weird sight

We drove the byway counter clockwise starting in Sisters. Lots of cute little shops to explore in Sisters. Santiam Pass is a major road so can get congested. Amazing views of surrounding mountains. Fall colors were amazing. Be sure to stop at Salish Falls. Very accessible via paved trails.
McKenzie Pass is the highlight of this scenic byway. Steepy, windy road with vehicle size restrictions. Views of mountains are awesome and when you get near top you are in lava field. Trails and interpretive signs at top and absolutely stunning view of the Sisters. Highly recommend this drive especially McKenzie Pass!

Not forest fires, but volcanic flows created this massive scenic area. Two lane road makes a good bike excursion, not friendly for vehicles over 35' in length. You can park at the overlook and hike an easy trail up to the observation tower. Reminds one of the Malpais area near Grants, NM, but with beautiful mountain views. Not recommended when snowed in, but definitely a memory maker in good weather. Exciting and worth the extra time if you are in the Sisters Oegon area.

The road is all paved but the McKenzie pass has length restrictions and is closed during the winter. There is evidence of fire damage that closed this pass 2 years ago. Watch for bicycles on the road.

I have traveled this route many times. It is a lovely backroad experience. Santiam Pass has views of Mt Washington, 3 Fingered Jack, as well as 3 Sisters. Along the MacKenzie Pass 3 Sisters are close at hand. It gives great access to hiking trails into the wilderness with lots of alpine lakes nearby as well as waterfalls.

Hi, what would you like to know about this attraction? What are the highway numbers?
Check a map but it looks like 242. Hardly a highway, though. Two lanes with lots of curves and turns.

It depends on conditions (early snow, wildfires etc) and closes at a different date every year. I would check the route on the tripcheck website. Or visit the ODOT website.

I can’t seem to find a website that specifically states when this will be open this year, as the opening date can vary. Does anyone know?

You have to contact odot. To find out when the road opens. It varies based on snow levels and the type of road work that they might be doing. I say this because each year is different.

How safe is drive during summer days? Are there guardrails?

It's a totally safe road, but be aware of your speed. People driving too fast tend to stray into the other lane and onto the shoulder on curves. I ride it on a motorcycle several times a summer.......other drivers are the only problem :)
