We came on Thursday, July 22 at around noon. The drive to Proxy Falls is beautiful, lined with trees on both sides. This trail is not difficult. It is a 1.6 mile loop and took us 1.5 hours and we spent some time in the Lower Falls.
If you do this clockwise, the last portion has no shade and it is hot. Also, when you get to the Lower Falls, expect to do some scrambling over trees and rocks. The trail to Lower Falls isn't very obvious. It is steep. Just be careful going down and coming back up.
At Upper Falls, we had to climb around a tree to get good views of the Falls.

This short 1.5 mile loop is mostly easy, but there are some parts that are steep and slippery if you don't have the right shoes on - particularly, as soon as the waterfall becomes visible. I would recommend wearing something sturdy AND waterproof if you want to get really close to the falls. The hike starts out going through lava rocks and quickly turns to lush forest. Note that the trail splits into Proxy Falls and LOWER Proxy Falls. Proxy Falls is a much smaller fall with no foot traffic - very tranquil if you just want to hear the sound of the water and enjoy the shade. If you want to see what the iconic picture shows, take the path toward Lower Proxy Falls. That will lead you to the base of the falls, but there are parts of the actual path that are grown over so there are several directions you can take. Don't worry, though. The falls are still in site so you won't get lost - just choose the direction you're most comfortable with. Once there, it's almost like you're in a fairytale with the sun shining through the towering trees, the clarity of the water and the butterflies flying everywhere!

An interesting trail to 2 wonderfully beautiful waterfalls. It says it is only 1 1/4 mile trail but after you are sure you have gone more than that, you all of a sudden find a waterfall. The trail could be rough for some people but an average person should be able to get within sight of the falls. We climbed down to the bottom of the lower falls and found it rather interesting getting back to the main trail. A very beautiful area.

The hike to the falls is relatively easy. You get to walk though a lava rock field which was unique. The falls are stunning with water flowing over mossy rocks.

We purposely took the scenic route from Redmond to Newport to stop and hike to these falls. So glad we did! They are absolutely beautiful! The hike to the falls is about a mile round trip. Right now they are asking that everyone goes in the same direction. It is a very easy trail. It goes through a gorgeous forest with huge redwoods and lava fields. You can get a great picture from the bridge. You can go done a small trail to get to the creek below as well as another trail to get close to the top.

2 for 1. Both upper and lower Proxy Falls are very impressive. Definitely have to do some climbing over and under logs, rocks, etc. in order to access the base of each set of falls. Well worth it if you are able to. Huge amounts of water.

Proxy Falls was beautiful. The lower falls is absolutely gorgeous. When you get to the bottom, the trail ends and you're really just walking on slippery rocks, so be careful! The upper falls is underwhelming. But it's a nice place to stop, sit, and relax.

There are two falls but the main one is the lower falls. The trail to the falls is a loop and if you start at the entrance sign and go to the right the trail goes over lava rock and is longer. The trail to the left is a short distance up the road but it is all dirt and shorter. To get down to the lower falls water you have to climb down a steep path and over some trees and thru some water. There is a sitting area just before you go down that gives you basically the same view but from a distance.

This was such a beautiful place. Was very crowded in June. But walking the trails and seeing the falls and nature was sooooo worth it.

Hi, I want to see just the lower falls, so which trail should I choose so that it will be less steep..

This sounds like a terrific hike. Please tell me about the condition of the trail. I have problems with my balance and walk with a cane. Trails that are very narrow or rocky are difficult for me. I can manage those impediments for a short distance, but not if the trail is one long trip hazard. Is this trail for me? Thanks, Kathy

Sorry, I am just seeing your question. Your best bet would be to try the trailhead to the left, go to the falls and then turn around and come back the same way. It was much easier/more flat than the trailhead to the right. I wouldn't recommend the full loop; the other side is very narrow/rocky. There were some fallen tree branches if I am remembering correctly, that we had to go over, but it could be that they have been cleared by now.

Unfortunately, the hike is not suitable for strollers. When hiking to the lower falls you will encounter plenty of roots and rocks.

Did you use Mckenzie pass? Was it open? I checked google maps that it is it closed from Nov-june

You can only access via McKenzie Pass. The pass will be closed until some time in June. I don't recall exactly where the gate shuts on the lower end, and how far it is from the parking lot trail head. it may be possible to access from the gate in Spring, but would be some additional hiking and likely snow!.

How long does it take to see Proxy falls if you take the trail to the left skipping the lava section? I would like to see the upper fall also. I am tryiing to coordinate an entire day which includes Smith Rock state park in the early morning, Sahalie and Koosah falls before going to Proxy. I am not from Oregon and I will only be 2 days in the Bend area, and my second day is booked.

Looking day and not sure Proxy is accessible. Check with Forest Service whether Old McKenzie Hwy is open. I think you need to choose between Smith Rock and a falls tour. Nowhere near each other. Check out Wm. Sullivan's 100 Hikes in Central Oregon at Bend Library...very good guide book.....

Is this hike accessible now? February 20, 2015.
It was not when I was there.. You might make it to the upper falls.. But not the lower falls...and it does have a lot of up and downs...
I would google map it.. And look at it in satellite mode
