Given a lot of on-line hype about Blacklock, we decided to tackle the shortest in/out version (about 4.5 miles, 300 feet up/down) from the airport road the last week of March 2021. We thought the trailhead was fairly easy to find from our Bandon basecamp. Because it had rained a lot the week before, we wore full-on rubber boots - which allowed us to move easily through about a dozen long, huge puddle-ponds (like - 15-25 feet long, over ankle deep) and incredible mud at times. Although much of the "trail" follows an old road, there were two more junctions than our map/sources suggested there would be - which was confusing. We thought there should be only 1 junction (going back to Flores - the infamously long route to Blacklock)... and we still don't understand where other junctions go. When you first pop out of the woods, you are still a good 5 minutes south of Blacklock proper. There is an Oregon Coast Trail sign and path down - which could confuse some people. We saw some blogs where people literally stop at this spot and don't realize they have to go north to get to the actual point. After hiking north along the grassy balcony path, we came to the point.
Since it was good weather (but windy) when we were there, we were able to hike another 10 minutes down the spine to this viewpoint where you can look north to the famous sandstone cliffs. It is not quite the close-up view you see in some pictures... we suspect you have to hike north and probably take some other side-trail for the best view of those. Although we were not as blown away by Blacklock as some people are, we appreciated it more after hiking the Cape Blanco North Loop trail a few days later - and looking back on Blacklock. We also appreciated how quiet and remote it was after attempting to visit/hike Boardman.

We had problems to find the Blacklock Point. Here is how we can find where to go. When we see the Pacific School, turn right. Drive until you see a fence. This is the Cape Blanco State Airport. Don't park at the entrance. There are lots of parking places and we can leave your car there.

The rest is simple. We hike.

Once we get close to the ocean, we will be amazed about the beauty of this area. Wow! The coastline, the mountains and the ocean are superb!

We explored everything we could and probably missed some of these beauty.

It was a bit misty while we were there. At one point, we saw a part of a mountain, covered by mist. Quite unique!

We had fun and we will never forget the beauty of this region.

This is a must see!
